The S&P 500 index will include Reddit next week

Reddit will join the S&P 500 next week, providing the expansive online forum with an enhancement in prestige and investment opportunities. Joining the S&P 500 is regarded as a significant milestone for a company, as the index serves as a prominent indicator of the overall health of the US stock market. A company is selected for the index based on several criteria that demonstrate stability, including market size and consistent profitability. Reddit’s stock experienced a notable increase of 12.6 percent on Friday.

In addition to status, inclusion translates into increased investments. The index monitors 500 of the largest US stocks, serving as a benchmark for trillions of dollars in investments. Those investments encompass mutual funds and exchange-traded funds. Essentially, those funds will be required to purchase the stock once it is incorporated into the index that the fund is tracking or emulating. Investors are increasingly relying on funds that replicate indexes like the S&P 500. It represents a more economical approach to investing, enabling savers to retain a greater portion of their investments.

Partly as a result of this, index funds have generally demonstrated superior performance compared to actively managed funds that attempt to select individual stocks. Reddit will be included in the benchmark index starting Tuesday. A stock must trade publicly for a minimum of 12 months to be eligible for inclusion in the S&P 500. The operator of the index, S&P Dow Jones Indices, adhered to that guideline recently when it declined to fast-track SpaceX into the index following the space exploration company’s substantial initial public offering in June.

Reddit’s inclusion follows the recent announcement of robust financial results for the second quarter. That encompassed its peak quarterly revenue to date. The company has consistently reported profits in nearly every quarter since its initial public offering in 2024. Wall Street anticipates that profits will more than double in 2026, driven by a significant increase in revenue.
