Musk Pours $158 Million Into GOP Senate Campaigns
In September, Elon Musk contributed $158 million to the primary super PAC supporting GOP Senate candidates, solidifying his position as the largest political donor in the United States for the second consecutive election cycle, as indicated by the most recent filings from the Federal Election Commission. The donations seem to be designated for the Texas Senate race, which is typically a secure seat for Republicans but has transformed into one of the most costly in history. Musk has now contributed over $330 million in the current election cycle, positioning him significantly ahead of other prominent political donors, including hedge fund manager George Soros, a consistent top contributor to Democrats, as well as Republican supporters such as quant trader Jeffrey Yass and Uline co-founder Richard Uihlein. That total encompasses an additional $89 million allocated to his own America PAC, which unveiled its third quarter disclosures prior to Thursday’s midnight deadline.
Musk’s prolific philanthropy persists despite his diminished political visibility compared to two years prior, when he actively participated in the final weeks of the presidential campaign alongside Donald Trump at rallies. He has significant interests tied to the results of the midterm elections. Musk’s interconnected network of enterprises – encompassing SpaceX, Tesla Inc., the Boring Company, and Neuralink – faces significant scrutiny from federal regulatory bodies. His leadership of DOGE, the slash-and-burn initiative aimed at restructuring the federal government, may face increased examination should Democrats gain control of the US House. His nine-figure contribution to the Senate Leadership Fund signifies a shift in his donation strategies: Musk has historically directed the majority of his political funds to America PAC. His donation, divided into two tranches of $75 million and $83 million, occurred weeks after SLF established Texas PAC, an affiliate concentrating on the Texas Senate race between Democrat James Talarico and Republican Ken Paxton, the state’s attorney general. SLF transferred amounts identical to Musk’s donations to Texas PAC one day after he made them.
Texas PAC has allocated $148 million toward the contest since September 11, according to FEC records, which is two days subsequent to Musk’s contribution. Musk’s America PAC has allocated $41.8 million to support Republican candidates in US Senate races, notably in prominent contests in Ohio, Michigan, Iowa, and Maine. It has allocated $9.6 million across over 30 competitive House districts, aligning with Republican initiatives to maintain their majorities in both chambers of Congress. Nowhere has the political action committee allocated more funds than in the US Senate contest in Texas, where it has expended $22.7 million to support Paxton and undermine Talarico. Musk, the chief executive officer of both Tesla and SpaceX, has resided in Texas since 2020, and his business empire continues to expand its footprint in the state. America PAC has allocated $7.6 million toward the Ohio Senate race featuring Democrat Sherrod Brown and Republican Jon Husted. It has also allocated $5.9 million in the Michigan race where El-Sayed is competing against Republican Mike Rogers.
Much of its expenditure in these and other contests has been allocated to phone calls, text messages, and printed materials such as mailers and door hangers. In the lower Hudson Valley, for instance, Republican Representative Mike Lawler is engaged in a competitive race against Democrat Cait Conley, with certain households receiving door hangers funded by America PAC. The mailers state, “The Socialist Left is Destroying America,” featuring a collage of images that includes Conley, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Senator Bernie Sanders. Musk’s donations expand the substantial financial edge that the GOP already possesses in comparison to Democrats. Trump, the Republican Party, and its congressional super PACs have accumulated $1.1 billion by the conclusion of the second quarter, which is three times the $355 million that the Democrats’ equivalent committees currently possess. The cash advantage represents a notable positive aspect amid a challenging electoral landscape for the GOP. Musk has a net worth of $920.6 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
Musk’s earlier donations this cycle encompass $10 million contributions to both the Republican-supporting Senate Leadership Fund and the Congressional Leadership Fund. In January, he contributed $10 million to the Fight for Kentucky PAC, which backed the Senate candidacy of Republican Nate Morris. Morris exited the race in May following Trump’s recommendation for him to withdraw. Musk also contributed $5 million to a super PAC backing Vivek Ramaswamy’s campaign for governor of Ohio. He contributed $50 million to America PAC in 2025, with the majority allocated to a Wisconsin state Supreme Court election in April 2025. The candidate endorsed by Musk, former state attorney general Brad Schimel, was defeated by Susan Crawford, a circuit court judge who received backing from the Democratic Party.
