Musk spends $276 million on elections to boost GOP control
Elon Musk has allocated approximately $366 million in the 2026 US midterm election cycle to date, with $276 million of that amount disbursed since July, aimed at supporting Republicans in their efforts to maintain control of Congress, despite the Democrats’ enhanced prospects of regaining the US House and Senate. Musk’s largess, as reported, positions the world’s richest individual as the likely single-largest political donor in this year’s races, according to campaign finance records. There is significant concern for Musk as Democrats in the US House of Representatives are initiating enquiries into his government contracts as CEO of aerospace company SpaceX, alongside his role managing the Department of Government Efficiency during President Donald Trump’s administration.
Here is a detailed analysis of his political expenditures, as verified by a representative of his super PAC America PAC. Musk has expended $366 million thus far in this election cycle, which commenced on January 1, 2025. At least $276 million has been allocated to Republican groups and his own super PAC since July. Of the $276 million in donations for the third quarter: $158 million was allocated to the Senate Leadership Fund, a super PAC established to assist in the election of Republicans to the Senate, which is associated with Senate Majority Leader John Thune, a Republican from South Dakota. $20 million was directed to the Congressional Leadership Fund, the super PAC created for House Republicans that is linked to House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana. $76 million was contributed to Musk’s America PAC.
$10 million was designated for the Lone Star Liberty PAC, which is backing Republican state Attorney General Ken Paxton’s campaign for the US Senate in Texas, where recent polls indicate a tight race against Democrat James Talarico. $10 million was allocated to the Republican Governors Association. Two million dollars was allocated to the Republican Attorneys General Association. America PAC is providing support to Republican candidates across seven key battleground states and in nearly thirty House races. The new contributions will be made public when numerous super PACs are mandated to reveal their third-quarter expenditures on Thursday.
Musk has also contributed a significant amount of money through organisations that do not reveal their donors, as reported. Approximately $90 million allocated during this cycle financed activities from the previous election or backed various initiatives, including an unsuccessful candidate for the Wisconsin Supreme Court and a contentious program that disbursed $1 million to registered voters who endorsed a petition advocating for free speech and gun rights, as stated by a spokesman for America PAC. Musk allocated approximately $290 million throughout the previous election cycle in which Trump emerged victorious in the presidential election contest against former Vise President Kamala Harris.
