G7 Finance Chiefs Unite to Combat AI Cyberattack Threats

Finance leaders of the G7 grouping have reached a consensus to conduct tabletop exercises aimed at mitigating the risks posed by AI-driven cyber attacks, according to Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama. This initiative reflects a broader trend among policymakers to enhance coordination in response to escalating cyber security threats. The agreement follows a warning from the International Monetary Fund this week, indicating that confidence might be compromised by an AI-enabled cyber attack targeting a crucial service of a financial institution. “The G7 finance deputies had been discussing the idea of doing tabletop exercises on frontier AI, which was signed off at the ministerial level,” Katayama told on Thursday.

She made the remarks following her participation in a meeting of finance ministers and central bank governors from the G7 advanced economies, convened on the margins of the IMF’s annual gathering in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand. The plan will incorporate simulations created by G7 finance authorities to evaluate their responses to AI-driven cyber attacks, according to a Japanese finance ministry official present at the finance leaders’ meeting. The results will assess the effectiveness of existing protocols and will inform revisions to manuals aimed at improving responses to such incidents, the official stated. The exercises conducted by G7 finance ministries and central banks may involve private financial institutions, contingent upon the specific nature of the simulations, the official noted.

Banking regulators worldwide are intensifying their initiatives to mitigate the escalating risks associated with artificial intelligence, as reported. Some experts highlight the possibility of cyberattacks targeting banks or the emergence of rogue agents that could threaten global financial stability. Among them is the Bank of England, which is collaborating with banks on comprehensive cyber-recovery strategies, its deputy governor stated on Thursday, emphasising that they can no longer take for granted that their defences are impervious to AI-enabled cyberattacks.
