Trump takes aim at Zohran Mamdani’s tax hike proposal
President Donald Trump criticized New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, cautioning that his initiative to increase taxes on the affluent would have detrimental effects on the nation’s largest city. “Sadly, Mayor Mamdani is DESTROYING New York! It has no chance! The United States of America should not contribute to its failure. It will only get WORSE,” Trump said in a social media post Thursday. “The TAX, TAX, TAX Policies are SO WRONG. People are fleeing. They must change their ways, AND FAST. History has proven, THIS ‘STUFF’ JUST DOESN’T WORK.”
Mamdani, elected on a firmly progressive platform, advocates for taxing the wealthiest New Yorkers to finance additional social programs and address a projected budget shortfall in the city. The mayor commemorated the tax filing deadline on Wednesday with a video message stating: “Happy Tax Day, New York.” We are imposing taxes on the affluent. Trump at an event in Las Vegas later Thursday remarked, “I mean, he’s a nice guy.” Frequently reaches out, greets with a ‘hi,’ yet his policies leave much to be desired. He is driving individuals away and inflicting significant damage on the community, resulting in skyrocketing taxes for everyone.
Some of Mamdani’s proposals for taxing affluent residents of the nation’s financial capital have faced resistance from New York Governor Kathy Hochul. However, she recently introduced a surcharge on owners of second homes in New York City valued at over $5 million, which has garnered the mayor’s backing. Trump, hailing from New York, consistently labeled Mamdani a “communist” throughout the mayoral campaign, imploring voters to dismiss his candidacy and warning of potential federal funding withdrawal should Mamdani emerge victorious.
However, he welcomed Mamdani to the White House shortly after his electoral triumph, with both parties indicating a readiness to collaborate. In February, they convened once more, a gathering that Mamdani characterized as “productive.”
