First half of 2026 net loss for Anthropic exceeds $80 billion
Anthropic reported a net loss exceeding $80 billion in the first half of the year and indicated that it may allocate up to $750 billion in the forthcoming years to enhance its computing capacity, as reported by the source on Tuesday. The loss, increasing from $13 billion a year earlier, was attributed to $72 billion in accounting charges related to adjustments in the value of financial instruments issued by Anthropic to secure funding, as reported in a draft prospectus for its IPO. The figures illustrate the substantial expenses associated with the AI race, as investors increasingly scrutinise the potential returns on the investments that companies are making in chips and data centers.
Anthropic’s revenue surged to $16.3 billion in the six months ending June 30, up from $1.1 billion in the same period last year, while AI infrastructure expenditures nearly quadrupled to almost $9 billion, according to the source. Source initially disclosed in September that Anthropic recorded a net loss of $42 billion in 2025, as part of a series of exclusives from its IPO prospectus. The company has reaped advantages from the widespread adoption of Claude Code, its coding assistant utilised by developers for software creation and application development.
However, certain existing and potential investors present at Anthropic’s investor day last week are considering a reduced valuation for the AI firm following its recent financial disclosures, according to four individuals. The investors who attended the event in San Francisco discussed a valuation of approximately $1.5 trillion, as reported by three individuals, marking a notable decline from the roughly $2 trillion valuation that had been anticipated for the November share sale.
Anthropic informed investors during the meeting that its third-quarter revenue surged 45% to $16.8 billion compared to the previous quarter, and that it achieved profitability on an adjusted basis for the quarter. A cooler reception for Anthropic’s IPO could impact the broader AI market, with investors perceiving the near-term outlook as largely dependent on the success of the share sale, especially in anticipation of rival OpenAI’s potential listing next year.
