Anthropic donates 5% of equity to ‘public benefit’ fund before IPO

Anthropic announced a commitment of 5 percent of its shares to a newly established “public benefit” fund, with the potential for the fund’s value to appreciate in tandem with the growth of its shares. The shares will be allocated to the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, a newly established entity within the company, it announced on Sunday. The fund “will have increased flexibility and scale, enabling us to pursue our mission in new ways: for example, we might explore large donations to traditional nonprofits or direct distributions to specific populations,” Anthropic stated.

It provided an illustration of labour market impacts, noting that it has already allocated USD 200 million to examine the effects of artificial intelligence, “given the pace of AI progress, bolder approaches may be needed”. CEO Dario Amodei, along with five co-founders, established Anthropic as a public benefit corporation, a designation chosen by for-profit entities to harmonise financial objectives with social impact. They have also pledged to donate 80 percent of their wealth.

An equity donation match program, in which approximately half of the company’s employees are involved, allows workers to pledge equity that is subsequently matched by Anthropic. In conjunction with the announcement made on Sunday, Anthropic indicated that approximately 20 percent of its shares will be allocated to the “public good,” with the possibility of increasing this percentage contingent upon the company achieving certain valuation milestones. Anthropic is preparing for a substantial initial public offering, potentially set for November.
