Crypto Market Falls as Oil Surge Fuels Fed Rate Hike Fears
Aggregate cryptocurrency market capitalisation experienced a further decline over the past 24 hours, coinciding with a notable increase in crude oil prices. Brent crude oil futures reached a peak of $100.87, while WTI crude oil futures hit a high of $91.90, as disruptions to oil transit caused by the Middle East conflict significantly impacted market sentiment. Overall, the cryptocurrency market capitalisation has experienced a decline exceeding 1 percent over the past 24 hours, with Bitcoin fluctuating between $66,359 and $64,932 during this timeframe. The recent surge in crude oil prices has bolstered expectations of a rate hike by the Federal Reserve. Markets currently assign a mere 38-percent probability for a quarter-percentage Fed rate hike in July; however, expectations for a rate increase in September appear to be more firmly established. According to the CME FedWatch tool, which monitors the expectations of interest rate traders, the probability of a quarter percent rate hike stands at 55 percent, whereas the anticipated likelihood of a half percent rate increase is 26 percent. As interest rates rise from current levels, the opportunity cost of holding non-earning cryptocurrencies increases, thereby affecting market sentiment.
