UK Job Market Splits as AI Skills Drive Hiring

UK employers are generating opportunities for seasoned professionals equipped with artificial intelligence competencies while simultaneously reducing positions in other areas, as indicated by recent data illustrating the emergence of a bifurcated labour market driven by this technology. British firms reported approximately 10% fewer job vacancies this month compared to January 2025, according to data. However, the decline masked significant inequalities as companies progressively integrate AI to reduce expenses and enhance efficiency. Software developers, a profession that has undergone significant transformation due to AI and experienced notable job losses since 2022, are witnessing a resurgence in demand, with job postings increasing by 14%.

Much of the increase originated from senior positions and roles directly associated with AI. Meanwhile, occupations such as IT and engineering, where AI enhances the value of experience by taking over routine tasks, are among the few that have remained resilient since last summer. In various sectors, including retail and manufacturing, as well as white-collar positions that face greater risks of substitution, such as accounting and marketing, job vacancies have decreased significantly. This decline is a response from employers to manage increased employment costs and navigate a more unpredictable economic landscape. “The UK labor market is increasingly splitting into two speeds,” said Jack Kennedy. “Demand is concentrating around experienced workers and roles directly connected to AI, rather than flowing evenly through the profession.”

The nature of the jobs being created — leaning toward senior staff with specific technological skills — also means that they will be out of reach for many individuals seeking to transition roles, re-enter the labour market, or secure their initial position. That raises questions about Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s initiatives aimed at motivating a greater number of young individuals to seek technical qualifications as a means of securing their career prospects. In a social media video, Burnham contended that while AI might possess the capability to compose an essay, it lacks the ability to construct a train.

However, there has been a significant deceleration in hiring for blue-collar occupations. Manufacturing postings have decreased by 58% since June 2022, now standing 18% lower than the levels observed last summer. Installation and maintenance, loading and stocking, as well as construction jobs, have also not shown signs of recovery. Youth unemployment in Britain has reached its highest level in more than ten years, a situation that Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey attributes to a “low hire, low fire” economic environment. “For jobseekers, particularly those at the start of their careers, the bar is therefore rising as the stronger areas of the market increasingly require either specialist AI capability or substantial experience,” Kennedy said.
