SpaceX Acquires AI Startup Cursor for $60 Billion
SpaceX has finalised a $60 billion acquisition of the artificial intelligence coding startup Cursor, which is a crucial element in Elon Musk’s strategy to enhance competitiveness against rivals Anthropic PBC and OpenAI. The deal became effective on Aug. 14, as indicated in a regulatory filing, two months subsequent to SpaceX’s formal announcement of its agreement to acquire the company. The takeover, one of the largest tech acquisitions ever, is intended to assist Musk’s firm in enhancing efforts to develop more advanced AI tools aimed at streamlining tasks, including coding, which represents a lucrative market for AI.
Musk’s AI venture, now known as SpaceXAI, previously experienced constrained business adoption and underwent a series of job cuts and restructurings. Cursor’s AI assistant, launched in 2023, was designed to enhance the efficiency of programmers in writing and debugging code. It emerged as one of the fastest-growing startups in history and a pivotal entity in the tech industry’s “vibe coding” phase, driven by a significant increase in demand among software developers for tools capable of generating code thru chatbot prompts. With the deal, Cursor’s co-founders will achieve billionaire status, and the startup’s team will gain access to SpaceX’s inventory of advanced AI chips.
“We will have access to the largest fleet of GPUs in the world, giving us the compute to build stronger models that are also more economical to run,” Cursor said in a blog post Friday. SpaceX and Cursor initiated their inaugural collaborative model in July, Grok 4.5, prior to the completion of the agreement. Grok 4.5 concentrated on coding, finance, and legal tasks, offering a more cost-effective solution compared to other competing models, according to the companies. Since then, SpaceX has introduced Grok Bot, a product that operates akin to a team of AI agents managing tasks throughout the day. It also introduced an updated Grok 4.6 model.
Alongside these efforts, SpaceX has secured a series of multibillion-dollar agreements allowing companies such as Anthropic and Alphabet Inc.’s Google to access its computing resources. In a meeting with SpaceX staffers in August, Musk emphasised that the company “must succeed on the software front.” Musk also stressed that artificial intelligence is the present and future of the firm. “Our AI revenue will exceed all other SpaceX revenue by September,” he said in the meeting.
