Disney Moves to Hire Character.AI Staff in $20 Million Asset Deal

The Walt Disney Company has reached an agreement to extend job offers to the majority of the workforce from the chatbot startup Character.AI, shortly following the company’s bankruptcy filing, as indicated in a submission to the US Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware. The total annual compensation for the employees receiving job offers is projected to be $60 million. Most employees who received offers have reportedly already accepted them. Character.AI previously announced that Disney had consented to acquire certain assets for a sum of $20 million.

Disney necessitated a character.AI is set to finalise its proposed technology deal via bankruptcy proceedings, as indicated by court filings that highlight the company’s dwindling cash reserves and increasing legal and regulatory challenges. The proposed arrangement aims to delineate the technology and workforce that Disney desires from the legal liabilities confronting Character.AI. Character Technologies, the entity responsible for the interactive chatbot platform Character.AI filed for bankruptcy protection on October 12, five years post-launch.

In its October 13 filing, the company indicated that the elevated expenses associated with the development and expansion of AI entertainment, along with potential liabilities stemming from litigation and regulatory interactions, had rendered it incapable of producing adequate cash flow to maintain its operations in their current structure. The startup has encountered legal and regulatory examination concerning child safety. A mother initiated legal action against the company, claiming that her 14-year-old son developed an obsession with a chatbot on the platform prior to his suicide. The company has also faced government investigations regarding concerns related to child safety.

In September 2025, Disney accused Character.AI of replicating its characters from franchises such as Frozen, Star Wars, and Marvel. The arrangement remains provisional at this stage. Disney’s proposal represents a preliminary bid that has set a baseline valuation for the company’s assets in the context of a bankruptcy liquidation. A rival bidder may present a higher offer, potentially undermining Disney’s proposed arrangement. The development follows the appointment of Karandeep Anand, Character.AI’s former chief executive officer has taken on the role of Disney’s inaugural chief technology officer.
