Airtel Money Set to Launch on London Stock Exchange
Mobile payments firm Airtel Money is poised to commence trading on the London Stock Exchange later on Friday, a listing that could signify the largest initial public offering for the exchange in five years. Existing shareholders, comprising the Qatar Investment Authority and TPG Inc., divested 270 million shares at a price of £1.96 each during the IPO, thereby generating approximately £529 million in capital. The deal valued Airtel Mobile Commerce NV, as the company is formally known, at approximately £5.3 billion. Majority owner Airtel Africa Plc and Mastercard Inc. may sell an additional 27 million shares through an overallotment option following the stock’s debut. The manner in which the company engages in trading will serve as the forthcoming examination of London’s initiatives to rejuvenate its capital markets.
A robust inaugural day would suggest that the city presents a conducive environment for IPOs, potentially motivating additional companies to pursue listings on the LSE. Simultaneously, a debut that falls short of the offer price would convey a negative signal throughout the market, possibly discouraging potential listing candidates. London’s stock exchange is currently facing an extended period of limited initial public offerings, a trend that is poised to enter its sixth consecutive year and has also affected the broader European market. While London commenced the year with a robust pipeline of potential IPOs, numerous plans have encountered delays, either due to volatile market conditions or to afford additional time for preparations.
Airtel Money has chosen to move forward with its IPO during a period of volatility for new listings, as numerous candidates in Europe and the US have delayed their upcoming offerings due to increasing interest rates and geopolitical uncertainty. “Today is a landmark moment for Airtel Money,” Chief Executive Officer Ian Ferrao said in the statement. “Our listing in London marks an important new chapter for our business and reflects what we have built across Africa and the significant opportunity ahead.” In an effort to stimulate investor interest, Airtel Money has adjusted its valuation expectations downward on two occasions and opted to offer shares at a fixed price rather than the traditional range. Nonetheless, it represented London’s most significant first-time offering since the peak periods of 2021, as per data.
Airtel Money operates a network of branches and kiosks throughout Africa, facilitating utility bill payments, microloan arrangements, and goods purchases, as detailed on its website. It processed $213 billion in the 12 months through June, with approximately 53 million monthly active users, as previously stated by the company. The fintech’s IPO has been regarded as an indicator of success for the London Stock Exchange Group Plc’s initiatives to draw in additional listings from international markets. The LSE has recently established a new segment on the bourse for secondary listings from international firms, while FTSE Russell, which manages the FTSE UK indexes, has streamlined the process for foreign companies to access the country’s benchmarks.
