Bitcoin ETF Outflows Lower Crypto Market Sentiment
Geopolitical risks to energy supplies and AI-related capital expenditure concerns are shaping global market discussions. The backdrop unfolded against a backdrop of escalating U.S.-Iran tensions and a major tech sell-off on Wall Street Thursday. Brent Crude topped $100 on Thursday, while the Nasdaq Composite fell over 2 percent. Cryptocurrency market cap dipped over 1%, while Bitcoin ranged from $65,760 to $64,611 in the last 24 hours. This shift happened due to worries about the earnings impact from rising AI costs and inflation from soaring crude oil prices. Crude oil prices surged on Thursday, yet both main benchmarks are dipping on Friday. This change stems from rising crude oil inventories in the U.S. and renewed diplomatic efforts with Iran. Wall Street futures have bounced back and are now in the green.
Cryptocurrency prices reflected ongoing fears of a possible Federal Reserve rate hike. Markets see a 34% chance of a quarter-point rate hike by the Fed on 29 July, according to the CME FedWatch tool tracking interest rate expectations. Expectations for a rate hike are climbing, with markets seeing a 56% chance of a 0.25% increase and a 23% chance of a 0.50% increase at the September FOMC meeting. U.S. Bitcoin Spot ETF outflows shake market sentiment. On Thursday, Bitcoin Spot ETFs in the U.S. saw $225 million in net outflows, a stark contrast to the $69 million inflows on Wednesday and $203 million on Tuesday. iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF saw $203 million in net outflows. In the past 24 hours, cryptocurrency market cap dipped 1.2% to $2.21 trillion. Out of the top 100 cryptocurrencies, only 7 saw overnight gains over 1%, while more than 55 faced losses of 1% or more. Despite the drop in crypto market capitalisation, trading volumes surged by 6 percent. The drop in global bond yields and the U.S. Dollar’s retreat helped ease losses for digital assets.
