Anthropic poised to finalise $30 billion funding round next week
Anthropic PBC is poised to finalise its latest funding round, potentially exceeding $30 billion at a valuation surpassing $900 billion, as early as next week, according to sources, positioning it ahead of competitor OpenAI to emerge as the most valuable AI startup globally. Sequoia Capital, Dragoneer Investment Group, Altimeter Capital, and Greenoaks Capital Partners are anticipated to co-lead the financing round, according to sources. Each of the firms plans to invest approximately $2 billion, according to sources. A number of other existing investors in Anthropic are also planning to participate, including Founders Fund, associated with Peter Thiel, and General Catalyst, according to sources. The total investments in the round are presently exceeding the $30 billion target set by Anthropic, according to sources. The commitments remain under finalisation, and the terms are subject to potential modification. The substantial funding round was assembled in just a few weeks, indicating robust investor interest in the creator of Claude. In late April, Anthropic was considering the pursuit of new financing at a valuation exceeding $900 billion, following the receipt of multiple inbound proposals, as reported. The artificial intelligence startup commenced discussions earlier this month.
Anthropic, Founders Fund, Sequoia, and General Catalyst refrained from providing any comments. Dragoneer, Altimeter, and Greenoaks did not provide a response to the request for comment. As previously reported on certain participants in the round. Founded in 2021 by a collective of former OpenAI employees, Anthropic has subsequently positioned itself as a prominent entity within the AI sector. Anthropic has developed a series of AI tools designed to transform the manner in which businesses manage tasks ranging from coding to cybersecurity. It has reported that both Anthropic and OpenAI are anticipated to pursue public offerings as early as this autumn. Anthropic anticipates generating $10.9 billion in revenue for the second quarter, reflecting more than a twofold increase from the previous three-month period, driven by a surge in demand for its AI software, according to reports. The company is on track to achieve its first profitable quarter.
The company has informed investors that its annualised run rate revenue is projected to exceed $50 billion by the end of next month, according to sources. Anthropic’s run rate, a metric that projects full-year revenue based on sales from a shorter period, stood at $4 billion in July of the previous year. At a recent conference, Anthropic Chief Executive Officer Dario Amodei reported that the company had achieved “80x growth” in annualised revenue and usage during the first quarter of this year. Consequently, he stated that the startup is “working as quickly as possible” to secure additional computing resources to bolster its services. Anthropic has secured a deal valued at nearly $45 billion with Elon Musk’s SpaceX, alongside a $1.8 billion agreement with Akamai Technologies Inc. aimed at enhancing its computing capacity. It has also engaged Alphabet Inc.’s Google for chips and cloud services.
Anthropic is also seeking additional financing from some of its suppliers. Google recently committed to invest $10 billion in the startup at a $350 billion valuation, consistent with its valuation during a funding round in February. Google intends to allocate an additional investment of up to $30 billion in Anthropic, contingent upon the startup achieving specified performance benchmarks. Amazon.com Inc. has previously announced an investment of $5 billion in Anthropic, which is valued at $350 billion, with intentions to contribute an additional $20 billion over time. It remains uncertain if those two firms will participate in the forthcoming funding round. OpenAI was most recently valued at $852 billion in a funding round completed in March. The company is anticipated to confidentially submit draft paperwork for its public offering in the near future.
