Trump Hosts King Charles at White House as US-UK Relations Waver
US President Donald Trump welcomed King Charles III to the White House for a visit marked by uncertainty regarding the future of Britain’s so-called special relationship with America and new security concerns following the shooting at the White House correspondents’ dinner. The British monarch and his wife, Queen Camilla, received a warm welcome from President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump on Monday, marking the beginning of a four-day trip. This visit is notable as it is his first state visit to the US since ascending to the throne in 2022. The couples engaged in handshakes and took a moment for a photograph at the South Portico of the White House prior to entering the building. The long-planned event aims to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the US’s independence from Britain.
However, its diplomatic significance has intensified in light of Trump’s recent conflict with Prime Minister Keir Starmer regarding the UK’s limited backing for US military action against Iran. The UK has chosen to proceed with the visit, undeterred by Saturday’s shooting at the hotel that hosted the annual press gala. On Sunday, Trump stated that the king would be “very safe” during an event featuring a military review at the White House and a speech to a joint session of Congress. “The King and Queen are most grateful to all those who have worked at pace to ensure this remains the case and are looking forward to the visit getting underway,” Buckingham Palace stated on Sunday. This marks the inaugural state visit by a British monarch since Charles’ mother, Queen Elizabeth II, undertook the journey in 2007. The late queen also addressed Congress in 1991.
The four individuals are partaking in afternoon tea and exploring an enlarged beehive at the presidential mansion, prior to the king and queen’s departure for a garden party at the residence of the British ambassador. “Every aspect of the White House program has been thoughtfully designed by President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump to celebrate our rich shared history — and to look forward to the next 250 years of the special relationship,” stated Ambassador Monica Crowley. The visit arrives during a tense period for UK-US relations, which may be at their lowest since the Suez Crisis in the 1950s. Trump has consistently lauded Charles, yet he has frequently targeted Starmer with criticism, labeling the UK’s elected prime minister as weak and unreliable. US House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries stated on Monday that although the relationship continues to be special, “toxic Republican policies for the last 15 months or so are eroding” it. “Hopefully the King’s visit is going to go a long way toward repairing the damage that this administration has done to one of our most important allies,” he said.
Trump and Charles are set to meet once more on Tuesday, with the king anticipated to emphasize the significance of the profound and lasting bond between the two allies. Following their two-day stay in Washington, the king and queen will proceed to New York to honor the Sept. 11 attacks, engage with a community organization that mentors children impacted by food insecurity, and participate in an event alongside senior business leaders. The duo will subsequently journey to Virginia for a block party and explore a national park before heading to Bermuda, a British overseas territory.
