US government in talks with AI firms for voluntary standards

The US government is currently engaged in advanced discussions with AI companies to establish voluntary standards for the release of new models. An announcement could be forthcoming as early as next week, according to sources. Washington has intensified scrutiny of new model releases to identify potential risks, driven by apprehensions that advanced AI could be exploited by military intelligence in China, Russia, or other nations of concern. The standards would establish benchmarks for advanced models and timelines, while delineating who can access them both in the United States and internationally, as stated in the report.

In June, US President Donald Trump issued an executive order directing agencies to collaborate with prominent AI developers to evaluate advanced models prior to their release and to formulate standards for these technologies. Google has engaged in discussions with the government in anticipation of the launch of advanced coding models featuring enhanced capabilities, a source reported on Wednesday. The company is also participating in wider conversations regarding industry standards.

The US Commerce Department on Tuesday removed export controls on Anthropic’s most advanced Fable and Mythos models, following a suspension that lasted less than three weeks due to national security concerns. OpenAI has encountered limitations as well. Last week, it postponed a comprehensive public launch of GPT-5.6 at the request of the US government, restricting access to a select group of approved partners. Both OpenAI and Anthropic are gearing up for initial public offerings.
