US launches ‘Project Freedom’ to rescue ships in Hormuz
The President Donald Trump, announced that the US Navy will commence the guidance of foreign vessels stranded in the Strait of Hormuz starting Monday. He cautioned Iran that any attempts to interfere with this operation would be met with a strong response. In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that ‘Project Freedom’ was designed to assist foreign ships that are detained in the Strait of Hormuz, characterizing them as “innocent bystanders” and asserting that they are not involved in the events occurring in West Asia. Trump indicated that several of these vessels were experiencing shortages of food, drinking water, and other essential supplies required for large crews to remain onboard in a healthy and sanitary condition.
Concurrently, the US President indicated that his representatives were engaged in constructive dialogues with Iran, potentially resulting in outcomes that could be deemed “positive for all.” The Strait of Hormuz, the constricted maritime passage separating Oman and Iran, which facilitates the transit of one-fifth of the world’s oil supplies, has been effectively rendered inaccessible since February 28, coinciding with the commencement of hostilities between the US and Israel and Iran. The United States has implemented an economic blockade aimed at Iran by prohibiting any vessels from transiting to and from the ports of the Persian Gulf nation.
The movement of ships is primarily intended to liberate individuals, corporations, and nations that have committed no wrongdoing; they are, in essence, victims of circumstance. “This is a humanitarian gesture on behalf of the United States, Middle Eastern countries, but in particular, the country of Iran,” Trump said. “We have informed these countries that we will ensure the safe passage of their ships through these restricted waterways, enabling them to conduct their business without hindrance,” he stated. “If, in any way, this Humanitarian process is interfered with, that interference will, unfortunately, have to be dealt with forcefully,” Trump said. It was reported that the United States submitted another revised draft on Sunday concerning an agreement to conclude the conflict, in reaction to the most recent proposal from Iranian officials. US special envoy Steve Witkoff informed that discussions are ongoing between the US and Iran aimed at concluding the conflict.
The global oil markets have experienced significant volatility since the onset of the conflict, with crude prices remaining elevated and briefly reaching $126 per barrel last week. The US President is encountering significant pressure due to elevated gas prices, which have surged to $4.45 per gallon in the US, marking an increase of nearly 50 percent since the onset of the war on February 28. The price of Brent crude, the global benchmark for oil, experienced a decline of less than one percent on Sunday evening, settling at approximately $107 per barrel. Meanwhile, West Texas Intermediate crude, the US benchmark, also saw a decrease of less than one percent, trading around $101 per barrel.
