India, Pakistan agree to halt shooting, military action

India and Pakistan have reached an agreement to halt firing and military actions. In a significant diplomatic development, India and Pakistan have come to an agreement to commence a “full and immediate ceasefire,” as stated by Vikram Misri, the secretary for external affairs. Misri stated, “The DGMO of Pakistan called the DGMO of India at 1535 hours this earlier this afternoon, it was agreed between them that both sides would stop all firing and military action on land, in the air and sea, with effect from 1700 hours IST today. Instructions have been issued on both sides to implement this understanding. The DGMOs are scheduled to engage in discussions once more on May 12, at 1200 hours.”

Both DGMOs are set to engage in discussions once more on May 12 at 12 pm. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar stated that both nations have come to an agreement on “stoppage of firing and military action.” In a post on X, Jaishankar stated, “India and Pakistan have today worked out an understanding on stoppage of firing and military action.” India has consistently upheld a resolute and unwavering position against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. It will persist in this manner.” The suspension of the Indus Water Treaty is set to persist. There is no decision to engage in discussions regarding any other matter at any other location.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump made the announcement via his official social media handle, where he disclosed that the agreement had been reached following a protracted series of negotiations. “After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE,” Trump posted.
He proceeded to praise both nations for their behavior throughout the discussions. “Congratulations to both Countries on using Common Sense and Great Intelligence.” Thank you for your consideration regarding this issue! Trump stated.

Although the post lacked specifics regarding the terms of the ceasefire or the particular issues discussed during the negotiations, it represents a notable advancement towards reducing tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors. The development arises in the context of increased regional tensions, characterized by cross-border strikes, drone attacks, and airspace restrictions, which have heightened fears of a wider conflict.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio wrote on X, “Over the past 48 hours, @VP Vance and I have engaged with senior Indian and Pakistani officials, including Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif, External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir, and National Security Advisors Ajit Doval and Asim Malik.” I am pleased to announce that the Governments of India and Pakistan have reached an agreement for an immediate ceasefire and to initiate discussions on a wide range of issues at a neutral location. We commend Prime Ministers Modi and Sharif for their wisdom, prudence, and statesmanship in opting for the path of peace.
