Sony and TSMC invest $6.3 billion on image sensor chips
Sony Group and Taiwan’s TSMC are set to invest approximately 1 trillion yen to collaboratively produce next-generation microchips utilised in image sensors, as reported. A joint venture, with ownership split approximately 60% by Sony and 40% by TSMC, is set to commence commercial production as early as 2029 in Kumamoto prefecture, located in southern Japan, according to the report.
The two technology leaders announced in May their intention to establish a joint venture in Japan aimed at the development and production of next-generation image sensors. This collaboration seeks to leverage Sony’s expertise in sensor design alongside TSMC’s strengths in manufacturing and process technology.
Sony and TSMC also stated that the partnership will explore opportunities in physical artificial intelligence applications such as automotive and robotics. Sony stands as the preeminent manufacturer of image sensors, which find extensive application in smartphones and automobiles, whereas TSMC holds the title of the largest contract chipmaker globally.
