US Consumer Sentiment Plummets Amid Inflation Worries

Americans persist in voicing their discontent with the economy, highlighting worries that the current US-Israeli conflict with Iran may intensify inflationary pressures. The University of Michigan’s final consumer sentiment reading for April was 49.8, indicating a slight increase from the preliminary report published earlier this month; however, it continues to be the lowest level observed since 1952. “Following the announcement of the two-week ceasefire and a slight easing in gas prices, sentiment regained a small fraction of its earlier losses for the month,” stated Joanne Hsu. The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has had a pronounced impact on the global economy, leading to a notable surge in gas prices for Americans, an uptick in inflation, and an increase in uncertainty surrounding their financial circumstances.

In April, personal finances experienced a decline of 9%, with nearly half of the surveyed consumers reporting that rising prices were adversely affecting their standards of living, as highlighted by Hsu. Consumers’ expectations for inflation over the next year have risen this month, increasing to 4.7% from 3.8% in March. The increase represented the most substantial one-month rise since April 2025, a time distinguished by President Donald Trump’s declaration of broad tariffs levied against various nations.

The conflict and its economic repercussions emerge at a time when Americans are grappling with heightened living expenses resulting from a post-pandemic inflation spike and prolonged price escalations that have exceeded historical averages. Sentiment continues to hover just beneath the levels recorded in June 2022, a time characterized by inflation hitting a four-decade high.
