Trump may extend July 9 trade talks deadline

On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump indicated he would extend the July 9 deadline for trade talks before his sweeping tariffs take effect. Trump said at the Kennedy Center before a concert that he did not think the deadline should be extended, Reuters reported. He stated that 15 countries, including South Korea, Japan, and the EU, were negotiating trade. We’re awesome at bargains. Several countries want to make a deal with us “Trump said he did not think a deadline extension was “a requirement”.

The US President also said they would send letters to dozens more countries about trade treaties in the coming weeks. At some time, we’ll issue letters saying, ‘This is the agreement. Take it or leave it. We’ll do that eventually. We’re not ready “said Trump. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent reminded Congress that the Trump administration may extend the 90-day deadline, which ends on July 9, or “roll the date forward” for good-faith negotiations.

This is the first time a Trump administration official has signaled flexibility on the tariff suspension expiry date. According to Bessent, “It is highly likely that those countries-or trading blocs, as is the case with the EU-who are negotiating in good faith, we will roll the date forward to continue the good-faith negotiations.” Further, “If someone is not negotiating, then we will not.”

Trump stated on April 2 that imposing tariffs on over 100 countries would “level the playing field” for American firms and workers. On April 9, Trump declared a 90-day delay in tariffs to allow countries to negotiate arrangements. The Trump administration has only signed one trade pact, with the UK. Negotiations with 17 others are reportedly underway.  The Trump administration made the comments a day after an appeals court allowed it to continue ‘collecting tariffs’ With an August 10 deadline last month, the US and China reached a separate trade war deescalation accord in London on Tuesday (local time).
