Bitcoin Soars 8% Amid Short Squeeze in Struggling Crypto Market

Bitcoin’s beleaguered market experienced a remarkable resurgence, climbing nearly 8 percent and triggering the most significant wave of short liquidations recorded since 2021. Over $1 billion in Bitcoin short positions were liquidated within approximately one hour, as reported. This highlights the rapid nature of a reversal that propelled the largest cryptocurrency to approximately $69,500, marking its highest value since early June and its most significant increase since March. Traders identified new incentives to engage in purchasing activities. President Donald Trump convened with cryptocurrency executives from companies such as Coinbase, Payward, and Blockchain.com at the White House, contributing to a sense of optimism regarding an administration that aims to foster a more favourable regulatory environment for digital assets. Declining borrowing costs provided an additional boost. “The move towards $70,000, triggered by short-covering, suggests buyers are regaining confidence, although the rally now faces a crucial test of whether it can sustain momentum and challenge the $75,000 region,” said Axel Rudolph.

The magnitude of the movement serves as an indicator of the extent to which the market has become imbalanced. Following several months of selling and a decline into the low $60,000s, there has been a significant accumulation of bearish positioning in an asset known for its tendency to overshoot in both directions. Once prices increased, compelled purchasing from short sellers contributed to the acceleration of the rebound, resulting in the kind of sudden recovery that often follows extended, unidirectional trends in cryptocurrency. The meeting at the White House occurred following the Securities and Exchange Commission’s proposal this week to exempt specific digital-asset offerings from the requirement of securities registration statements. This development marks a continuation of the regulator’s crypto agenda in the wake of significant legislation that has encountered delays in Congress. The agency indicated that the exemptions aim to assist companies during the initial phases of their development and capital-raising efforts.

Trump also stated on Wednesday that he would take into account regulators’ suggestions regarding further government acquisitions of Bitcoin, although a current executive order already mandates the Treasury and Commerce departments to formulate budget-neutral strategies for increasing their holdings. “Crypto trading desks and market headlines have been inundated by sellers in the last few weeks,” said Joshua Lim. “Despite that, price action held very firm in the low $60,000s, which turned into a sentiment and narrative shift.” The rally extended across digital tokens, propelling Bitcoin above its 100- and 200-day moving averages, which are technical indicators closely monitored by traders. Ether surged by as much as 12 percent, marking its largest single-day increase since March. In the Bitcoin options market, traders established protective positions near $60,000 while anticipating an ascent toward $70,000, with open interest heavily concentrated in puts and calls at those specific strike prices, as reported by crypto exchange Deribit.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has initiated a new effort to control long-term borrowing costs, which have reached multiyear highs. This move has resulted in a decline in Treasury yields and the dollar, thereby enhancing the environment for higher-risk assets. Just two weeks after announcing its intended schedule for buybacks this quarter, the Treasury Department on Wednesday stated that it is “increasing, by at least double, the size of liquidity support buyback operations” for securities ranging from the 10-year to the 30-year sector. “Bitcoin short was a conviction trade over the last few weeks, but the news today from the Treasury in the US has obviously triggered a confidence-induced rush into risk assets like BTC,” said Adam McCarthy. Shares of companies focused on cryptocurrency also experienced a rally. Coinbase, the US digital trading platform, experienced a 10 percent increase, while Bitcoin accumulator Strategy Inc. saw a rise of 13 percent, and stablecoin issuer Circle Internet Group Inc. surged by nearly 10 percent.

The crypto market structure legislation, known as the Clarity Act, has encountered delays in the US Senate due to a conflict between Democrats and Republicans regarding ethics provisions, which have been influenced, in part, by Trump’s involvement in the digital-assets sector. For Bitcoin, the immediate test lies in determining if Wednesday’s compelled purchasing transitions into authentic demand. The short squeeze illustrated the extent to which the downturn had been extended. It also demonstrated that following months during which almost every significant movement appeared to trend downward, the cryptocurrency market’s ability for abrupt, self-reinforcing recoveries remains robust.
