China-US ties will be ‘historic, landmark year’ in 2026: Xi Jinping
Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday characterized 2026 as a “historic, landmark year” for China-US relations during his reception of US President Donald Trump at the Great Hall of the People for discussions. The heads of the two foremost global economies are set to engage in several discussions on Thursday and Friday. Upon his arrival at the Great Hall, Trump was welcomed by Xi, who proceeded to introduce him to the Chinese officials. This was followed by Xi engaging in a handshake with the US officials accompanying the president. Subsequently, they examined the guard of honour prior to engaging in discussions. During his opening remarks at the meeting, Xi conveyed to Trump his expectation that 2026 will be a “historic, landmark year” for China-US relations. China and the United States are compelled to collaboratively address the pressing issues of our era. The presidential meeting between China and the US in Beijing draws significant global interest, as the two leaders engage in discussions.
Trump expresses anticipation for a “big discussion” with President Xi, as reported. Trump’s arrival in Beijing last night was met with an enthusiastic reception. The visit by President Trump occurs in the context of increasing economic and geopolitical uncertainties stemming from conflicts in the West East and the resulting global energy shock that has significantly impacted Asia. During the visit, Xi and Trump are anticipated to engage in discussions regarding the conflict in Iran, trade relations, technological advancements, and the situation in Taiwan, among other contentious issues. Trump received a warm reception from Chinese Vice President Han Zheng at the airport, an unusual deviation from standard diplomatic protocol. Officials indicate that the majority of senior leaders visiting China, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, a close ally of Xi, were welcomed by State Councillors, a prominent position within the ruling Communist Party of China. By delegating Vice President Han to welcome Trump, China conveyed a significant message regarding the value it placed on his visit, analysts noted. Eric Trump and his wife Lara, alongside Tesla CEO Elon Musk, exited Air Force One in the company of Donald Trump. Accompanying Trump on his trip to China are several prominent business leaders from the United States. Nvidia’s Jensen Huang, Apple’s Tim Cook, Tesla and SpaceX’s Musk, and BlackRock’s Larry Fink are among those accompanying the US president.
In a recent social media post, Trump expressed his intention to urge President Xi, a leader of notable distinction, to ‘open up’ China. He believes this would enable talented individuals to contribute their skills and elevate the People’s Republic to new heights. Trump stated that it will be his “very first request” when he meets the Chinese leader, according to reports. “I have never seen or heard of any idea that would be more beneficial to our incredible countries,” he stated. The last-minute inclusion of Nvidia’s Jensen Huang in Trump’s delegation was deemed noteworthy, given the pivotal role of semiconductor chips in the US-China technology competition. China is negotiating for semiconductor chips to advance its AI technology, whereas the US is seeking rare-earth minerals essential for the production of mobile phones and aircraft jets. In anticipation of Trump’s arrival, Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng and Scott Bessent finalized the last round of trade negotiations in South Korea, the specifics of which remain undisclosed. In the coming two days, Trump and Xi are set to engage in multiple discussions aimed at addressing both bilateral and global matters, with a particular focus on the situation in Iran.
The discussions are anticipated to center on trade and tariffs, artificial intelligence and technology, Taiwan and the United States’ arms sales to Taipei, Iran and the broader West Asia region, as well as rare earth elements and supply chain dynamics. Trump’s itinerary in Beijing featured a stop at the Temple of Heaven, a collection of imperial temples historically utilized by emperors to pray for favorable harvests. Prior to his departure for Beijing, Trump informed the media in Washington that his discussions with Xi would primarily focus on trade. He intends to formalize additional agreements with China to increase the procurement of American food products and aircraft. The two nations are also intending to establish a Board of Trade with China to resolve disparities between them. The international attention surrounding the summit will primarily center on potential resolutions that could bring an end to the US-Israeli conflict with Iran and lift the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
