China’s July Exports Stagnate as High-Tech Demand Slumps

China’s exports experienced a modest deceleration in July compared to the previous month, even in the face of strong demand for high-tech electronics and vehicles. Customs data released Friday indicated that China’s trade surplus decreased to $112.5 billion from $125.6 billion in June. Exports increased by nearly 24 percent in July compared to the same month last year, a slight decrease from the 27 percent rise observed in June. Imports increased by 27.5 percent year-on-year; however, this figure is a decline from June’s surge of 36 percent.

Analysts indicated that disruptions to port operations caused by typhoons contributed to a deceleration in trade. The boom in Chinese trade experienced a slight deceleration in July; however, the overarching trend indicates that both export and import values continue to be robust, bolstered by a significant global demand for electronics and green technology products,” Julian Evans-Pritchard noted in a report. The Iran war interfered with shipments of aluminium from West Asia, leading to an increase in Chinese exports of the metal, he noted. Trade data indicate that China has completely shifted from primarily offering low-cost manufacturing to supplying essential machinery and components for advanced manufacturing.

Exports of high-tech items experienced a remarkable increase of nearly 41 percent in the January-July period compared to the same timeframe the previous year. Additionally, vehicle shipments saw a significant rise of 55 percent, while overall exports of electronics and machinery grew by 26 percent. China’s exports to the US increased by a modest 2.6 percent year-on-year during the first seven months of this year, whereas imports from the US saw a growth of 1.4 percent. Exports to the European Union increased by nearly 17 percent, whereas exports to Southeast Asia, now China’s largest trading partner as a bloc, experienced a significant surge of 25 percent.
