U.S. Market Futures Higher as Stocks Continue to Gain

U.S. stock futures are higher in pre-market trading for Tuesday, June 21. The Dow Futures are up 70.00 points to 17782.0. The S&P 500 Futures are up 10.25 points to 2084.5. The Nasdaq Futures are higher at 4413.0 for a gain of 23.00 points. The Russell Futures are showing a gain of 6.10 points to 1156.8.

In overnight trading in the Eastern Hemisphere stock trading was mixed. China’s Shanghai Composite was at 2878.56 for a loss of -10.25 points or -0.35 percent. Japan’s Nikkei 225 was higher at 16169.11 for a gain of 203.81 points or 1.28 percent. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index was at 20668.44 for a gain of 158.24 points or 0.77 percent. The S&P BSE Sensex was at 26812.78 for a loss of -54.14 points or -0.20 percent. In Europe, stocks traded higher. The FTSE 100 was at 6205.43 for a gain of 1.43 points or 0.02 percent. Germany’s DAX was at 10020.03 for a gain of 58.01 points or 0.58 percent. France’s CAC 40 was at 4370.23 for a gain of 29.47 points or 0.68 percent. The Stoxx Europe 600 was at 339.32 for a gain of 1.65 points or 0.49 percent.

Tuesday’s Factors and Events

The focus of Tuesday’s trading will be on speeches from Federal Reserve officials. At 10:00 AM EST Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen will be speaking before the Senate Banking Committee in Washington. Her speech will likely give more insight on the Fed’s economic perspective and could provide direction on the next rate increase. At 2:30 PM EST Federal Reserve Gov. Jerome Powell will be giving opening remarks at a meeting discussing alternative reference rates in New York.

In pre-market trading for the day, stocks trading actively include United Technologies, Ford, Bank of America, Visa, eBay, Walmart and Wells Fargo.

Stocks on watch with earnings reports on Tuesday include CarMax Group, Lennar Corporation, KB Home, Adobe Systems Incorporated, FedEx Corporation and La-Z-Boy Incorporated.

Also on watch Tuesday will be Boeing after the company has completed a deal to sell aircrafts to Iran. On Monday the stock was up 2.27 percent.

Monday’s Activity

For the day the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 17804.87 for a gain of 129.71 points or 0.73 percent. The S&P 500 was also higher, closing at 2083.25 for a gain of 12.03 points or 0.58 percent. The Nasdaq Composite closed higher at 4837.21 for a gain of 36.88 points or 0.77 percent.

Other notable index closes in the U.S. included the small-cap Russell 2000, closing higher at 1157.70 for a gain of 13.00 points or 1.14 percent; the S&P 600 closing at 710.04 for a gain of 8.56 points or 1.22 percent; the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index closing at 1494.98 for a gain of 15.03 points or 1.02 percent; the S&P 100 closing at 919.27 for a gain of 4.32 points or 0.47 percent; the Russell 3000 closing at 1229.71 for a gain of 8.14 points or 0.67 percent; the Russell 1000 closing at 1154.09 for a gain of 7.20 points or 0.63 percent; the Nasdaq 100 closing at 4400.16 for a gain of 25.78 points or 0.59 percent; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index closing at 600.01 for a gain of 3.04 points or 0.51 percent.
