According to official claims, aerospace giant SpaceX and electric car manufacturer Tesla are investing $16.8 billion to construct “Terafab,” an advanced AI semiconductor factory in Texas, intended to close an impending shortfall in the world’s chip supply. The initial stage of the vertically integrated, 100-million-square-foot facility in Grimes County, Texas, is projected to generate a minimum of 3,000 lucrative positions for engineers, technicians, and plant operators. Future expansion phases are anticipated to substantially increase total investment, as stated by SpaceX on its website on Thursday.

“The Terafab is bringing cutting-edge manufacturing to America, creating thousands of high-paying jobs in the Lone Star State, and enabling us to produce AI chips at scale for use on Earth and in space,” SpaceX Founder and CEO Elon Musk said in the statement. The mega facility aims to satisfy an expected demand exceeding one terawatt of computing power for Musk’s ventures. The plant will manufacture, package, and test advanced logic and memory chips all under one roof to support Tesla’s Optimus humanoid robots and Cybercabs, in addition to high-performance processors for SpaceX’s proposed orbital data centers.

The expansion occurs as Musk intensifies the integration of artificial intelligence initiatives across his businesses, following SpaceX’s acquisition of the AI startup xAI earlier this year. Texas Governor Greg Abbott has expressed support for the project by announcing a $30 million Texas Enterprise Fund performance grant to facilitate the investment. In an official press release, he noted that the facility will “accelerate chip production in Texas at an unprecedented scale and expand economic opportunity across the region.”
