Anthropic Launches Biology Lab to Boost AI Drug Initiative
Anthropic has discreetly established a laboratory to conduct physical biology research as it advances its artificial intelligence objectives into the realm of drug science. In an era marked by public apprehension regarding artificial intelligence, a startup has established a wet lab, designated for physical experiments, in the San Francisco Bay Area, according to sources. Anthropic has stated it wants to unlock treatments for rare diseases, and its biological research has progressed beyond mere computer evaluations. In an interview on Tuesday, Eric Kauderer-Abrams, the head of life sciences at Anthropic, confirmed the establishment of the startup’s wet lab. “We believe that to do biology, the final test is still and will be for a while in real lab work,” he said. “We absolutely are doing that today, and I would describe our approach as being typical of what you would see in most biotech companies, where there’s some amount of that that we’re doing in our own facilities and some amount of that that we’re working with external partners on.” A spokesperson later clarified that Anthropic’s lab is not specifically dedicated to drug discovery, opting not to provide further details. The move represents a modest advancement in Anthropic’s grand aspiration to address diseases that it believes the pharmaceutical sector is overlooking – and to achieve this before employees and the public lose confidence in the notion that AI warrants the elimination of jobs and potentially human lives, according to one source. The success of any drug program it runs is not guaranteed; the majority of drugs do not succeed in passing trials for clinical safety and efficacy.
For Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, the endeavour is deeply personal. A disease claimed the life of his father just a few years prior to the advent of a cure, he noted in a recent essay. Kauderer-Abrams reiterated the sentiment. “The mission of the company is to develop powerful AI in such a way that benefits the world,” Kauderer-Abrams said. “By far, we see the biggest opportunity for that in the life sciences, and that is motivating everything that we’re doing.” Similar to other firms in the biotechnology sector, Anthropic is adopting physical automation, according to two sources. The startup aims to demonstrate how its Claude AI can guide robotic units in conducting scientific experiments with minimal human involvement, according to one source. Anthropic maintains that human oversight and involvement are crucial for safety, according to its spokesperson. “We’re in the very early innings of using AI to automate the execution of lab work,” said Kauderer-Abrams, “an area that has the potential to bring about meaningful acceleration in so many different processes.” Anthropic’s pursuit of swiftly advancing technology in a biology lab occurs during a remarkable period for the firm.
In the last fortnight, certain researchers expressed concerns that AI might result in human extinction, while Anthropic reported instances where its systems could potentially be applied to the development of biological weapons, a claim that was met with some scepticism. Amodei also advocated for a development slowdown, asserting that a future AI with capabilities surpassing those of the OpenAI agents that compromised Hugging Face could result in catastrophic consequences. At the same time, Anthropic is gearing up for a public offering that could reach $2 trillion, aimed at securing additional funding for its AI development initiatives. “In our life-science work, we’re always balancing these things,” Kauderer-Abrams said, “making models better in ways that we think will uplift and accelerate developing medicines, and being thoughtful and careful about how we deploy it to limit the risk.” Anthropic announced its intention to initiate drug programs during an event in San Francisco in June. On stage, Kauderer-Abrams stated that Anthropic would engage in preclinical work in domains that conventional companies deemed financially unattractive. The company also launched software called Claude Science, and it earlier added Novartis CEO Vas Narasimhan to its board and acquired the startup Coefficient Bio for approximately $400 million in stock, according to reports. Anthropic confirmed the acquisition, which will assist in the development of tools for drug development; however, it refrained from commenting on the deal price.
Now, Anthropic is enhancing its internal laboratory initiatives to improve efficiency and gain direct experience in biology. Although it outsources work when it is efficient, Kauderer-Abrams stated. “There’s some things that we can do much faster in our own hands,” he said, with the goal “to operate at the largest possible scale.” Anthropic has looked to hire a leader who could ramp up procurement and other operations, it said in a recent LinkedIn job post. Another Anthropic role solicited via Jobera sought an expert on “protein and nucleic acid characterization,” among other biochemical work. A third Anthropic job listing read: “Our goal is to speed up progress in the life sciences by an order of magnitude.” Life sciences already constitutes one of Anthropic’s largest investment domains in terms of both personnel and resources, according to Kauderer-Abrams. His perspective is that AI has the potential to accelerate development for conditions that were previously deemed “undruggable” – too challenging to treat. The technology has the potential to accelerate the discovery of bispecific and trispecific antibodies, which are intricate molecules capable of targeting multiple sites on a specific protein or cell, or addressing several targets simultaneously. The specific diseases that Anthropic is targeting, along with its advancements, are not clearly defined. Once a molecule is identified, it can take years to bring a drug to market as it undergoes testing in human trials, a challenge that Anthropic has not undertaken.
Isomorphic Labs, the pharmaceutical research division of competitor Alphabet, has invested significant time in its pursuit of clinical application, previously postponing its target timeline to the conclusion of 2026. In its pursuit of laboratory and industrial automation, Anthropic introduced the Model Hardware Standard in August, which facilitates the operation of equipment by AI. A release from academia known as PyLabRobot, which is not associated with Anthropic, previously tackled automation requirements that are related yet distinct. Anthropic is delivering initiatives such as the Model Hardware Standard and a range of AI services and tools to various leading pharmaceutical firms, including Roche’s Genentech, Bristol Myers Squibb, and Novo Nordisk. Simultaneously, Anthropic is addressing a trust issue, according to sources. Customers of Anthropic may express concerns regarding the potential for the AI startup to gain insights from their competing drug programs, despite the measures taken to safeguard their data from visibility. Kauderer-Abrams indicated that Anthropic, influenced in part by competitive considerations, has established a limit on conducting clinical trials at this time, prioritising needs that the industry may overlook. “We’re not competing with pharma and biotech companies that make their business in bringing drugs to market,” he said.
