2003–2008: Commodity Supercycle Strengthens AUD

This period saw a global commodity boom, driven by China’s rapid industrial expansion. Australia’s key exports—iron ore, coal, and natural gas—were in high demand. The EUR/AUD pair declined, reflecting AUD appreciation.

From 1.65 in 2003, the euro weakened steadily against the Aussie dollar, reaching 1.45 by 2005 and then falling below 1.40 by 2008. During this time, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) raised interest rates consistently, while the European Central Bank (ECB) maintained a more cautious stance.

2009–2012: Global Crisis and Eurozone Debt Fears

The 2008 financial crisis briefly reversed the trend. Investors fled to perceived safe-haven assets, and the EUR/AUD surged above 2.00 in early 2009. However, the rally was short-lived. As Australia weathered the crisis better than most due to strong Chinese demand and a resilient banking system, the Aussie rebounded strongly.

By late 2010, EUR/AUD was back under 1.40, and fell below 1.30 in 2012, as the eurozone sovereign debt crisis (Greece, Spain, Italy) kept euro sentiment weak.

2013–2019: Euro Stabilization and Aussie Correction

After peaking in strength, the AUD began weakening in 2013, reflecting a slowdown in commodity prices, cooling Chinese growth, and falling interest rates in Australia. The euro stabilized during this period despite low ECB rates.

As a result, the EUR/AUD rose from around 1.25 in 2013 to above 1.60 by 2015. Between 2015 and 2019, the pair remained range-bound between 1.40 and 1.65, with both currencies influenced by central bank easing cycles and relative economic stability.

2020–2024: Pandemic, Rate Hikes, and Volatility

The COVID-19 pandemic introduced new volatility. Initially, the Australian dollar weakened due to global uncertainty, and EUR/AUD jumped to nearly 1.90 in early 2020. However, Australia’s swift reopening, coupled with strong commodity prices (iron ore, LNG), helped the AUD regain strength.

In 2022–2023, both the ECB and RBA entered aggressive rate-hiking cycles to combat inflation. The EUR/AUD traded in a volatile 1.45–1.65 range, influenced by diverging inflation paths and China’s shifting demand.

As of April 2025, the EUR/AUD exchange rate stands near 1.62, reflecting cautious optimism for Europe and a slowdown in Australia’s export momentum.
