U.S. Market Indexes Higher with Positive Earnings

U.S. market indexes were higher Tuesday. For the day the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 18161.94 for a gain of 75.54 points or 0.42 percent. The S&P 500 was also down, closing at 2139.60 for a gain of 13.10 points or 0.62 percent. The Nasdaq Composite closed higher at 5243.84 for a gain of 44.01 points or 0.85 percent. The VIX Volatility Index was lower for the day at 15.12 for a loss of -1.09 points or -6.72 percent.

Tuesday’s Market Movers

Stocks were higher Tuesday with positive earnings to start the week. Oil price gains were also a factor as OPEC reported it was committed to capping production.

Leading economic reports for the day included the Consumer Price Index and the Housing Market Index. The Consumer Price Index was up 0.3 percent for the month and 1.5 percent for the year. The Housing Market Index decreased from the previous month to 63 from 65.

Top sectors for the broad market were healthcare and materials. Technology was also higher with technology stocks in the S&P 500 gaining 0.68 percent. Technology stocks leading gains for the day included the following:

In commodities, gold traded higher as evidenced by the SPDR Gold Trust which reported a gain of 0.75 points or 0.63 percent. The dollar was higher for the day as the U.S. Dollar Index was up 0.01 points or 0.01 percent to 97.89.

Small-Cap Stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index was higher at 1217.47 for a gain of 7.34 points or 0.61 percent. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index was higher at 737.40 for a gain of 2.41 points or 0.33 percent. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index was higher at 7386.32 for a gain of 41.85 points or 0.57 percent. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index was higher at 8601.13 for a gain of 56.56 points or 0.66 percent.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1527.74 for a gain of 9.55 points or 0.63 percent; the S&P 100 Index at 949.50 for a gain of 5.20 points or 0.55 percent; the Russell 3000 Index at 1265.82 for a gain of 8.27 points or 0.66 percent; the Russell 1000 Index at 1185.50 for a gain of 7.36 points or 0.62 percent; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 603.41 for a gain of 2.81 points or 0.47 percent.
