U.S. Market Indexes Lower as Investors Await Debate Discussions

U.S. market indexes were lower Monday. For the day the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 18094.83 for a loss of -166.62 points or -0.91 percent. The S&P 500 was also lower, closing at 2146.10 for a loss of -18.59 points or -0.86 percent. The Nasdaq Composite closed lower at 5257.49 for a loss of -48.26 points or -0.91 percent. The VIX Volatility Index was higher for the day at 14.44 for a gain of 2.15 points or 17.49 percent.

Monday’s Market Movers

Stocks were lower Monday as investors awaited Monday evening’s debate with numerous issues affecting the market and near-term trading.

Leading reports on the economic calendar for Monday included New Home Sales and the Dallas Fed Manufacturing Survey. New home sales were reported at 609,000 SAAR which was just below consensus of 598,000 and also down from last month’s 659,000 SAAR. The Dallas Fed Manufacturing Survey’s Production Index gained to 16.7 from 4.5 and the General Activity Index stayed negative at -3.7 which was slightly higher than its previous reading of -6.2.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led losses:

In the broad market, financial stocks and healthcare led losses. Technology was also lower for the day with S&P 500 technology stocks down 0.59 percent. The Nasdaq Composite closed lower at 5257.49 for a loss of -0.91 percent. The Nasdaq 100 was also lower closing at 4817.17 for a loss of -0.86 percent.

In commodities, gold traded lower as evidenced by the SPDR Gold Trust which reported a loss of -0.10 points or -0.08 percent. The dollar was lower for the day as the U.S. Dollar Index was down -0.13 points or -0.14 percent to 95.31.

Small-Cap Stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index was lower at 1240.94 for a loss of -13.68 points or -1.09 percent. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index was lower at 750.08 for a loss of -9.31 points or -1.23 percent. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index was lower at 7542.43 for a loss of -73.15 points or -0.96 percent. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index was lower at 8687.97 for a loss of -71.20 points or -0.81 percent.

Other Notable Indexes

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1542.52 for a loss of -8.30 points or -0.54 percent; the S&P 100 Index at 948.76 for a loss of -9.19 points or -0.96 percent; the Russell 3000 Index at 1272.31 for a loss of -10.76 points or -0.84 percent; the Russell 1000 Index at 1190.64 for a loss of -9.82 points or -0.82 percent; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 614.67 for a loss of -4.29 points or -0.69 percent.
