U.S. Market Indexes Lower with a Gain for the Week

U.S. market indexes were lower on Friday. For the day the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 18261.45 for a loss of -131.01 points or -0.71 percent. The S&P 500 was also down, closing at 2164.69 for a loss of -12.49 points or -0.57 percent. The Nasdaq Composite closed lower at 5305.75 for a loss of -33.78 points or -0.63 percent. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 12.29 for a gain of 0.27 points or 2.25 percent.

For the week the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.78 percent. The S&P 500 gained 1.19 percent. The Nasdaq Composite Index gained 1.16 percent.

Friday’s Market Movers

Stocks were lower Friday following lower oil prices. The Baker Hughes Rig Count reported an increase of 11 oil rigs in North America during the week. Oil prices fell approximately 3 percent on Friday. WTI crude oil was down 3.43 percent to $44.73. Brent crude oil was down 3.23 percent to $46.11.

Other leading economic reports for the day included the PMI Manufacturing Index and the Atlanta Fed Business Inflation Expectations. The PMI Manufacturing Index report showed the Index at 51.4, down from 52.1. The Atlanta Fed Business Inflation Expectation was 1.9%.

In the broad market, energy and technology led losses. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5305.75 for a loss of -0.63 percent. The Nasdaq 100 was also lower closing at 4858.91 for a loss of -0.66 percent. Stocks leading losses in the technology sector included the following:

Alexion Pharmaceuticals -4.84

Yahoo! Inc. -3.06

Skyworks Solutions Inc. -2.77

Liberty Media Group -2.69

In commodities, gold traded higher as evidenced by the SPDR Gold Trust which reported a gain of 0.08 points or 0.06 percent. The dollar was higher for the day as the U.S. Dollar Index gained 0.09 points or 0.09 percent to 95.46.

Small-Cap Stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1254.62 for a loss of -8.82 points or -0.70 percent. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 759.39 for a loss of -5.25 points or -0.69 percent. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 7615.58 for a loss of -57.03 points or -0.74 percent. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 8759.17 for a loss of -62.51 points or -0.71 percent.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index closing at 1550.82 for a loss of -12.12 points or -0.78 percent; the S&P 100 Index closing at 957.95 for a loss of -5.25 points or -0.55 percent; the Russell 3000 Index closing at 1283.07 for a loss of -7.43 points or -0.58 percent; the Russell 1000 Index closing at 1200.47 for a loss of -6.83 points or -0.57 percent; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index closing at 618.96 for a loss of -3.25 points or -0.52 percent.
