OpenAI predicts $600 bn in compute spending through 2030
OpenAI is aiming for approximately $600 billion in total compute expenditures by 2030, a source informed on Friday, as the creator of ChatGPT gears up for an IPO that could potentially value the company at as much as $1 trillion. OpenAI’s 2025 revenue reached $13 billion, exceeding its $10 billion projection, while expenditures totaled $8 billion for the year, falling short of its $9 billion target, the source said. The development arises as Nvidia approaches the completion of a $30 billion investment in OpenAI, part of a fundraising round in which the AI startup aims to secure over $100 billion.
The valuation of the company led by Sam Altman would reach approximately $830 billion, representing one of the most significant private capital raises in history. According to a source, which first reported the development, Microsoft-backed OpenAI anticipates exceeding $280 billion in total revenue by 2030, with nearly equal distribution between its consumer and enterprise units. Altman previously stated that OpenAI is dedicated to investing $1.4 trillion to create 30 gigawatts of computing resources — sufficient to supply power to approximately 25 million US homes.
In a separate report, The Information stated that OpenAI informed investors that the costs related to operating its AI models, referred to as inference, surged fourfold in 2025, leading to a decline in its adjusted gross margin from 40 per cent in 2024 to 33 per cent.
