U.S. judge bans Trump’s ‘Head Start’ prohibition on immigrants

A federal court has ordered an injunction against an order that was issued by the Trump administration. The order banned children who were living in the United States illegally from enrolling in Head Start, which is a preschool program that receives funds from the federal government. The injunction was given across the whole country.

There has been a surprising turn of events in which Head Start organizations from a number of different states have initiated legal action in response to the policy change that was enforced by the United States Department of Health and Human Services. Thursday was the day when a federal court in the state of Washington handed down its verdict. This came about as a result of the successful efforts of a coalition of twenty-one Democratic attorneys general to temporarily stop the implementation of the policy within their respective jurisdictions. The policy has been placed on hold across the entirety of the federal government as a direct result of the most recent ruling.

A rule reinterpretation proposal was published by the Department of Health and Human Services in the month of July. The proposal’s objective was to prohibit immigrants who are living in the country illegally from having access to specific social services. This encompasses a wide range of initiatives, including Head Start and other programs, with the main objective of enhancing the health of the community. It was under the administration of President Bill Clinton that laws were enacted at the federal level that made it feasible for those programs to be made available to the entire population. The adjustment was a component of a bigger effort that was underway by the Trump administration with the purpose of stopping individuals who do not have legal status from getting social benefits by adjusting the qualifying criteria that are utilized by the federal government. The campaign was undertaken with the intention of preventing individuals from accessing social benefits. The programs that would be affected would be categorized as federal public benefits, which would result in restrictions being put on the ability of immigrants to participate in such programs.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who serves as the Secretary of Health, has stated that this alteration has the potential to have the impact of reducing illegal immigration. There is a common rule that states individuals who are residing in the country without the appropriate legal status are not qualified to receive public assistance from the federal government. Loans for higher education and food handouts are examples of these perks.
