Trump threatens to target Iran’s energy sites without a swift ceasefire

On Monday, US President Donald Trump cautioned that Washington might focus on Iran’s civilian and energy infrastructure should a ceasefire not be achieved promptly, while asserting that discussions were in progress with what he characterized as a “more reasonable” regime. In a recent post on Truth Social, Trump indicated that the United States was involved in “serious discussions” focused on concluding its military operations in Iran. “The United States of America is engaged in serious discussions with a new, and more reasonable, regime to conclude our military operations in Iran,” he stated.

Trump stated that the US could “conclude” its presence in Iran by targeting essential infrastructure, such as electricity-generating plants, oil wells, Kharg Island, and possibly desalination facilities, which he noted had not yet been attacked. “Great progress has been made but, if for any reason a deal is not shortly reached… and if the Hormuz Strait is not immediately ‘open for business,’ we will conclude our lovely ‘stay’ in Iran by blowing up and completely obliterating all of their electricity-generating plants, oil wells, and Kharg Island (and possibly all desalination plants!), which we have purposefully not yet ‘touched (sic),” he said.

The conflict has now reached its 31st day, exhibiting no apparent indications of a de-escalation in tensions among the involved nations. Overnight strikes executed by US and Israeli forces are said to have impacted Tehran and other significant urban centers, focusing on power infrastructure and resulting in extensive blackouts. The escalation coincides with an increasing US military presence in the region. Recent reports suggest that several hundred US Special Operations personnel, in conjunction with approximately 3,500 Marines stationed on the USS Tripoli, have been deployed, bringing the total number of US troops in the region to exceed 50,000.

In the meantime, the Iranian Navy has asserted that it targeted the USS Abraham Lincoln in the Arabian Sea, although independent verification of this assertion is still ambiguous. Last week, Iran reportedly dismissed the 15-point peace proposal put forth by Trump, while the US president asserted that he had achieved “some progress” with the Iranian “leadership” he was engaging with. However, he did not specify the individuals involved in the negotiations with the US from Tehran.
