Trump Praises Japan’s PM Takaichi for Election Win
US President Donald Trump on Sunday congratulated Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and her coalition on what he described as a “landslide victory” in Japan’s general election, calling the outcome historic and commending her leadership. In a statement shared on Truth Social, Trump remarked, “Congratulations to Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and her Coalition on a LANDSLIDE Victory in today’s very important Vote.” He characterized Takaichi as “a highly respected and very popular Leader” and remarked that her choice to call an election had “paid off big time.” Trump remarked that Takaichi’s party currently holds a two-thirds supermajority in the legislature, describing it as “a HISTORIC TWO THIRDS SUPERMAJORITY – the first time since World War II.” He stated, “It was my honor to endorse you and your coalition.” I wish you great success in advancing your Conservative, Peace Through Strength agenda. In a show of appreciation for Japanese voters, Trump remarked that the “wonderful people of Japan” had cast their votes with enthusiasm and would “always have my strong support.” The Trump administration extended congratulations to Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on her “big victory” in the general election, following the ruling Liberal Democratic Party securing a two-thirds majority in the House of Representatives.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated on Fox News that Trump has a “great relationship” with Takaichi and emphasized that “when Japan is strong, the US is strong in Asia.” Bessent expressed her approval of her ruling coalition securing a two-thirds majority in Japan’s more powerful House of Representatives, describing it as a “big victory.” US Ambassador to Japan George Glass characterized the victory as a “impressive win,” stating in a post on X that the administration anticipates building on Trump’s “reinvigoration of the US-Japan partnership by continuing to deepen cooperation between our two dynamic nations.” Congratulations to Prime Minister @takaichi_sanae on a remarkable victory in the House of Representatives election. “I look forward to building on @POTUS @realDonaldTrump’s reinvigoration of the U.S.-Japan partnership by continuing to deepen cooperation between our two dynamic nations.” On Sunday, US President Donald Trump endorsed Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi as Japan conducted a significant legislative election. Trump expressed his anticipation of welcoming Takaichi to the White House on March 19, reflecting on his recent trip to Japan, where he and his delegation were “extremely impressed” with her leadership. Emphasizing the importance of bilateral cooperation, Trump noted the close coordination between Washington and Tokyo regarding national security and trade. He stated that the United States and Japan have collaborated on “a very substantial Trade Deal, one that strongly benefits both Countries.” In a direct endorsement of a foreign leader during an election, Trump stated, “As President of the United States of America, it is my Honor to give a Complete and Total Endorsement of her, and what her highly respected Coalition is representing.” He concluded the message with a strong vote of confidence in the Japanese leader, writing in capital letters, “SHE WILL NOT LET THE PEOPLE OF JAPAN DOWN!” He also wished voters luck ahead of what he referred to as their “very important Sunday Vote.”
Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party secured a two-thirds majority in the House of Representatives during Sunday’s general election, providing Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi with a strong mandate to pursue her conservative policy agenda, as reported. Surpassing the two-thirds threshold of 310 seats in the 465-member lower house empowers the LDP to advance constitutional revision and enact legislation, even in the face of opposition from the upper House of Councillors, where the ruling coalition holds a minority position. The LDP is the first party in postwar Japan to achieve such a margin. The decisive outcome signifies a notable rise from the party’s pre-election tally of 198 seats and was largely ascribed to Takaichi’s individual appeal. The LDP and its coalition partner, the Japan Innovation Party, will together command a dominant presence in the chamber, reinforcing Takaichi’s position following her assumption of office in October. Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is set to visit Washington for the first time since assuming office. This visit will occur ahead of US President Donald Trump’s scheduled trip to China in April, following Beijing’s increasingly hard-line response to her remarks regarding a potential crisis in the Taiwan Strait, as reported.
Trump has consistently lauded Japan’s dedication to substantial investments in the United States, a crucial aspect of a trade agreement finalized last summer after his tariff warnings directed at Tokyo, according to reports. Since her early days in office, Trump has publicly praised Takaichi, the leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, referring to her as a protégé of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, with whom he developed a close personal relationship during his first term. On Sunday, the US State Department stated that the administration is eager to advance “US security and economic priorities, as well as our shared interests, in the Indo-Pacific and globally” in collaboration with Japan, according to reports. A State Department spokesperson characterized the US-Japan alliance as “the cornerstone of peace, security and prosperity” in the region, further stating that it “has never been stronger,” as reported. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese extended their congratulations to Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi following the Liberal Democratic Party’s success in the elections for Japan’s House of Representatives.
In a post on X, Zelenskyy extended his congratulations to Takaichi on what he characterized as a significant electoral victory. “This is an important victory and an excellent result. Today, we all need strong leadership so that the world can return to stability and predictability – and, ultimately, to peace,” he stated. Zelenskyy conveyed gratitude for Japan’s backing of Ukraine, noting, “We value the fact that Japan is among those who provide principled support for the protection of our people, our lives, and Ukraine’s independence.” He stated that assistance from Japan has helped save “thousands upon thousands of lives” during Russia’s war against Ukraine and highlighted Japan’s involvement in the Coalition of the Willing as well as its support in restoring Ukraine’s energy sector. “We hope that together we can deliver even more results in the interests of our peoples,” he stated. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed his congratulations in a post on X, stating, “Congratulations Sanae Takaichi on your election win.” Emphasizing the strong bond shared by the two nations, Albanese remarked, “Australia and Japan’s friendship has never been closer. I look forward to strengthening it and deepening ties between our countries.”
