Elon Musk Unveils ‘America Party’ to Counter Trump’s Tax Bill

In the midst of an intensifying dispute with US President Donald Trump, billionaire tech entrepreneur Elon Musk has formally founded a new political party in the US called the “America Party.”
The move came a day after the CEO of Tesla publicly criticized Trump’s spending and tax cut package by signing the multitrillion-dollar “One, Big, Beautiful Bill” outside the White House. Musk had referred to the Bill as “fiscally irresponsible” and a “betrayal” of their shared goal of shrinking the government. Musk made the announcement on his X platform, citing an online survey he conducted that showed 65.4% of respondents supported the formation of a “America Party.”
Musk unveiled the plan on Sunday, saying he started the party to combat what he called a “corrupt one-party system.”He asserted that the America Party wants to restore people’s “freedom” and charged that both Republicans and Democrats were responsible for the nation’s debt by engaging in excessive government spending and corruption. “If you want one, you will have a new political party by a two-to-one ratio! “To restore your freedom, the America Party was founded today,” he said on X. Given that he is the richest person on the planet, Musk is anticipated to finance the initial operations himself.
The America Party’s goals and strategy As a centrist alternative to the Republican-Democrat duopoly, Musk suggested that the America Party “laser-focus” on gaining a small number of crucial seats, like two to three Senate seats and eight to ten House districts, where slim victories could give them disproportionate influence. Using only two or three Senate seats and eight to ten House districts would be one way to implement this plan. Given the incredibly tight legislative margins, that would be enough to serve as the decisive vote on contentious laws, ensuring that they represent the true will of the people,” Musk said on X.
Analysts characterize the party’s platform as neoliberal and fiscally conservative, emphasizing deregulation, free trade, deficit reduction, and high-skilled immigration. According to Musk, the party wants to appeal to people’s discontent with the traditional two-party system by putting roughly 80% of Americans in the political center. For now, the America Party has only been announced. Formal registration and state-by-state ballot access are potential roadblocks. In the coming months, it will be evident whether this endeavor is a long-term realignment or a short-term third-party experiment.
Trump and the White House have not yet responded to Musk’s statement. The private dispute between Trump and Musk, his main campaign backer, quickly escalated into a highly publicized altercation. After Musk publicly denounced Trump’s massive tax and spending bill, calling it a fiscally irresponsible and betrayal of conservative values, the rift grew. They used to be viewed as allies with comparable political goals.
Despite his long history of defending American business, Trump reportedly became infuriated by Musk’s adamant opposition to the Bill and responded in public by threatening to cancel government contracts and even deport Musk. According to media reports, Republicans are concerned that Musk’s sporadic disagreements with Trump could make it harder for them to maintain their majority in the 2026 midterm congressional elections.
