As a leading indicator for the NSE Nifty, the SGX Nifty is pointing lower for stocks in India. On Tuesday, stocks in India were lower. The NSE Nifty closed at 8335.95 for a loss of -34.75 points or -0.42 percent. The BSE Sensex was also lower at 27166.87 for a loss of -111.89 points or -0.41 percent. Most all sectors were lower Tuesday however capital goods, healthcare and metals reported gains. Stock sectors leading losses included auto, banking, information technology and energy. The S&P BSE Auto Index was lower at 19686.25 for a loss of -217.94 points. The S&P BSE Bankex was lower at 20647.37 for a loss of -94.33 points. The S&P BSE Information Technology Index was lower at 11175.4 for a loss of -56.58 points. The S&P Oil & Gas Index was lower at 10095.03 for a loss of -50.27 points.
Stocks in India were lower after reaching new highs in the previous six days of trading. Stocks leading losses for the day included Tata Motors Ltd. and GAIL. Fertilizer companies were also lower for the day after retail prices were lowered by the government. Fertilizer companies lower in trading on Tuesday included Coromandel International and Zuari Agro Chemicals.
In other Asian markets, stocks were also mostly lower. China’s Shanghai Composite closed at 3006.39 for a gain of 17.79 points or 0.60 percent. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index was lower at 20750.72 for a loss of -308.48 points or -1.46 percent. Japan’s Nikkei was lower at 15669.33 for a loss of -106.47 points or -0.67 percent.
In Europe, stocks were also mostly lower. The Stoxx Europe 600 was lower at 324.17 for a loss of -5.61 points or -1.70 percent. The Stoxx Europe 50 was lower at 2783.03 for a loss of -30.99 points or -1.10 percent. The Euro Stoxx 50 was lower at 2812.88 for a loss of -49.33 points or -1.72 percent. France’s CAC 40 was lower at 4163.42 for a loss of -71.44 points or -1.69 percent. Germany’s DAX was lower at 9532.61 for a loss of -176.48 points or -1.82 percent. The FTSE 100 was higher at 6545.37 for a gain of 23.11 points or 0.35 percent. The FTSE 250 was lower at 15734.68 for a loss of -382.02 points or -2.37 percent.
In the U.S., the leading market indexes were lower. On Tuesday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 17840.62 for a loss of -108.75 points or -0.61 percent. The S&P 500 was also down, closing at 2088.55 for a loss of -14.40 points or -0.68 percent. The Nasdaq Composite closed lower at 4822.90 for a loss of -39.67 points or -0.82 percent.
Other notable index closes in the U.S. included the small-cap Russell 2000, lower at 1139.44 for a loss of -17.33 points or -1.5 percent; the S&P 600 closing at 700.06 for a loss of -10.11 points or -1.42 percent; the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index closing at 1482.28 for a loss of -17.92 points or -1.19 percent; the Russell 3000 closing at 1229.75 for a loss of -9.77 points or -0.79 percent; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index closing at 608.86 for a loss of -3.50 points or -0.57 percent.
