Trump: Iran Conflict Shaped NATO, Rift Started with Greenland
US President Donald Trump has criticized the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, alleging that the alliance, along with allied nations like South Korea, Japan, and Australia, has not provided adequate support to the US in the Iran conflict. Trump’s comments during a press conference at the White House on Monday occurred just days before NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte’s scheduled visit to Washington for discussions with the US President, who has characterized the alliance as a “paper tiger”. Trump remarked that the conflict with Iran has imprinted on NATO “that will never disappear in my mind.” The US President articulated that the divergences with NATO commenced when it rejected his proposal to acquire Greenland. “Nato is a paper tiger that Putin’s not afraid of,” Trump told.
Regarding the conflict in Iran, Trump remarked that NATO members “went out of their way not to help”. We attended the NATO meeting. “I didn’t ask very strongly, I just said, ‘Hey, if you want to help, great’,” the US President remarked. “No, no, no, we will not help,” Trump stated he was informed, without specifying the identity of his interlocutor. Trump stated that NATO members were attempting to engage with him and extend support only after the United States had already achieved victory in the war. “They are scheduled to meet with me on Wednesday,” he stated, noting that “all of a sudden” there was a newfound desire to provide assistance. Trump remarked, “Japan didn’t assist us, Australia didn’t assist us, South Korea didn’t assist us, and then you arrive at NATO – NATO didn’t assist us.
“We’ve got 50,000 soldiers in Japan to protect them from North Korea; we have 45,000 soldiers in South Korea to protect us from Kim Jong Un,” Trump stated. Trump stated that he maintains a “very well” relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Consider who else failed to provide assistance. South Korea did not provide assistance. Consider who else failed to provide assistance. Australia did not provide assistance to us. Consider who else failed to provide assistance. Japan,” Trump stated. However, there are 45,000 individuals, soldiers positioned in a precarious situation adjacent to Kim Jong-un, who possesses a significant arsenal of nuclear weapons—45,000—an occurrence that should have been avoided.
“If a certain president, whom I happen to like, believe it or not, were to fulfill his responsibilities, Kim Jong-un would not possess nuclear weapons. However, they all seem hesitant to execute their duties effectively,” Trump stated. He also suggested that the widening rift between the United States and NATO began earlier, when he first proposed taking over Greenland. It all commenced with, if one seeks the truth, Greenland,” Trump stated. Our interest lies in Greenland. They are unwilling to provide it to us. And I said, ‘bye, bye’,” stated the US President.
