China Hesitant on Trump’s Gaza Peace Board Without UN Support
On Wednesday, China expressed its concerns regarding participation in US President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace for Gaza, emphasizing that its involvement would be contingent upon the initiative being conducted under the auspices of the United Nations. This stance underscores China’s steadfast dedication to an international framework centered around the global organization. China has consistently demonstrated its commitment to genuine multilateralism and will steadfastly protect the international system centered around the United Nations, stated Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Guo Jiakun during a news briefing here.
Guo addressed a query regarding Trump’s assertion that the UN ought to persist, although the Board of Peace he suggested “might” supplant the organization. Regardless of the developments in the international landscape, China will steadfastly uphold the international system centered around the United Nations, maintain the international order supported by international law, and adhere to the fundamental norms that govern international relations, as outlined by the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, Guo stated.
On Tuesday, China acknowledged receipt of an invitation from the US to participate in the Board of Peace, yet refrained from disclosing its decision regarding potential participation. In response to inquiries concerning Trump’s intention to convene a signing ceremony for the Board of Peace in Davos, Switzerland, and the potential attendance of Chinese representatives, Guo indicated that the Chinese side has already addressed the issue of the “Board of Peace,” stating, “I have no further information to add.”
In response to inquiries regarding the “chaos” instigated by the Trump administration and China’s stance on such disorder, Guo asserted that China maintains the view that, irrespective of fluctuations in the global landscape, it is essential to uphold the international system centered around the UN. He emphasized that an order grounded in international law and the fundamental norms of international relations, aligned with the objectives and principles of the UN Charter, is in the collective interest of all nations.
