US Lawmaker Aims to Eliminate H-1B Visa Scheme

An American lawmaker is set to introduce a bill aimed at completely abolishing the H-1B visa programme, thereby removing the pathway to citizenship it provides and compelling individuals to “return home when their visa expires.” My esteemed fellow Americans, I’m introducing a bill to completely eliminate the H-1B visa programme, which has been riddled with fraud and abuse and has been displacing American workers for decades. Marjorie Taylor Greene stated on Thursday. She stated that her bill will include only one exemption, permitting a cap of 10,000 visas per year for medical professionals such as doctors and nurses who deliver life-saving care to Americans. Greene, however, emphasized that this $10,000 per year cap will be gradually eliminated over a decade, providing us with the necessary time to cultivate our own pipeline of American doctors and physicians. Greene stated that her bill will eliminate the pathway to citizenship, compelling visa holders to return to their home countries once their visa expires.

She further stated that the aim of her bill is to reinstate the original purpose of the H-1B visa, which was designed to be temporary. These visas were designed to address a specific occupational requirement at a particular moment. Individuals ought not to be permitted to reside here indefinitely. “We thank them for their expertise, but we also wish them well so they may return to their home country,” she said. This will effectively terminate the H-1B visa program and impact all other sectors within the job market and workforce. This is America first. It is imperative to prioritize American citizens over foreigners, as this situation has constituted an abuse for far too long. Americans are entitled to a future. They deserve a chance. “And I believe Americans are the most talented people in the world, the most creative, and I want them to have their American dream,” she said. To strengthen the nation’s supply of American doctors and medical professionals, Greene stated that her bill will prevent Medicare-funded residency programs from accepting non-citizen medical students into their ranks.

She observed that in the previous year, more than 9,000 doctors in the US graduated from medical school yet found themselves without a residency placement. In 2023 alone, more than 5000 foreign-born doctors secured residency positions, she stated. This situation is completely unjust, and it prioritizes America last. My bill will help mitigate the shortage of doctors and nurses in our country, the shortage that we face while at the same time serve as an off-ramp from our reliance on foreign workers by allowing us time to fill our residency programmes with American doctors,” she said. A congressionally mandated cap exists, limiting the issuance of regular H-1B visas to 65,000 annually, with an additional 20,000 reserved for holders of US advanced degrees. U.S. businesses utilize the H-1B program to hire foreign workers in specialized fields. The Trump administration has initiated a significant effort to address abuses within the H-1B visa program, which is utilized by companies, especially in the technology sector, to hire foreign workers in the United States.

Among the largest cohort of H-1B visa holders are Indian professionals, including technology workers and physicians. Companies have the opportunity to seek permanent residency for their H-1B employees, who may then apply for US citizenship five years following the receipt of their Green Cards. In September this year, President Donald Trump issued a Proclamation titled ‘Restriction on Entry of Certain Nonimmigrant Workers’ as a significant initial step to reform the H-1B nonimmigrant visa programme. According to the reports, specific H-1B petitions submitted after September 21, 2025, are required to include an additional payment of USD 100,000 to qualify for eligibility.
