Trump tariffs court ruling doesn’t stop US trade talks

Despite a US appeals court ruling that most of President Donald Trump’s tariffs are illegal, the Trump administration is pressing on with discussions with trading partners, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer stated on Sunday. In an interview on Fox News’ “Fox & Friends” program, he stated, “Our trading partners, they continue to work very closely with us on negotiations.” “People are moving forward with their deals, regardless of what this court may say in the interim.”

Greer refrained from disclosing the specific countries with which the United States is still engaged in discussions, noting instead that he had a conversation with one trade minister on Saturday morning. The US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington delivered a 7-4 decision on Friday concerning Trump’s so-called reciprocal tariffs established in April, along with tariffs levied against China, Canada, and Mexico in February. However, this ruling does not affect tariffs imposed under different legal authority. Trump criticized the decision, stating, “I will take the case to the US Supreme Court.”

The appeals court has ruled that his tariffs will remain in effect until October 14, providing time for appeals to be processed. The Republican president has established tariffs as a cornerstone of US foreign policy during his second term, which began in January. He has employed these tariffs to apply political pressure and to renegotiate trade agreements, despite the fact that they have contributed to increased volatility in financial markets.
