Tim Cook Backs China Amid Regulatory Pressure

Tim Cook, Chief Executive Officer of Apple Inc., praised Chinese developers and the company’s partners in the region, shortly after the ruling party’s main newspaper took issue with the iPhone maker’s monopolistic practices. Cook, addressing the China Development Forum in Beijing on Sunday, commended the innovations of Chinese developers and the automation present in the nation’s manufacturing facilities. He stated that Apple and China have aligned objectives, particularly in the areas of green development and carbon neutrality. Earlier this month, Apple reduced the fees it charges app developers in the country, marking a significant concession in a highly profitable market where the company was at risk of antitrust action from local regulators.

“Innovation, green development and education are not separate properties — they are deeply connected,” Cook stated. “They embody the vision of progress that we at Apple uphold, and we are dedicated to working alongside our partners in China and with all of you to turn that vision into reality.” Cook stated “An excellently talented developer community” contributes to enhancing prosperity and opportunity throughout China, while innovation is reshaping its manufacturing sector.

Although the US tech giant primarily manufactures its devices in China, it has expanded its assembly operations to include regions like Vietnam and India. “There is a Chinese proverb I love – ‘a single tree does not make a forest,’” Cook stated. “Together, I believe we can plant that forest.” Apple has experienced a resurgence in sales growth in China in recent months, driven by demand for the latest iPhone edition and consumers transitioning from competing devices. Revenue from the country surged by 38%, reaching $25.5 billion in the holiday quarter that concluded in December.

During the same event as Cook, Chinese Premier Li Qiang highlighted Apple as a prime example of a company boasting a highly diversified supply chain. “If we politicize industrial issues and deliberately weaponize the supply chain, we will only increase costs for various companies and weaken development momentum,” Li said. “China is willing to strengthen communication and cooperation with all parties to jointly maintain the stability and security of the global supply chain.”
