U.S. Market Futures Pointing Higher as Market is Poised to Gain

U.S. stock futures are pointing higher in pre-market trading for Monday, July 11. The Dow Futures are up 62 points to 18100.0. The S&P 500 Futures are up 6.26 points to 2127.5. The Nasdaq Futures are up 22.25 points to 4539.5. The Russell Futures are showing a gain of 5.40 points to 1178.9.

In overnight trading in the Eastern Hemisphere stocks were higher. Japan’s Nikkei 225 was higher at 15708.82 for a gain of 601.84 points or 3.98 percent. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index was higher at 20880.50 for a gain of 316.33 points or 1.54 percent. China’s Shanghai Composite was higher at 2994.92 for a gain of 6.82 points or 0.23 percent. India’s S&P BSE Sensex was higher at 27626.69 for a gain of 499.79 points or 1.84 percent. In Europe, the FTSE 100 was higher at 6641.21 for a gain of 50.57 points or 0.77 percent. Germany’s DAX was higher at 9751.23 for a gain of 121.57 points or 1.26 percent. France’s CAC 40 was higher at 4229.83 for a gain of 39.15 points or 0.93 percent. The Stoxx Europe 600 was higher at 329.81 for a gain of 2.46 points or 0.75 percent.

Monday’s Factors and Events

Few economic reports are on the calendar for Monday. The main report for the day will be the Labor Market Conditions Index. The Treasury will be holding auctions Monday for the 3-month bill, 6-month bill and 3-year note. Also on Monday Loretta J. Mester and Esther George from the Federal Reserve will be speaking.

Stocks trading actively in pre-market trading for the day include the following: Alliance Data System, Chesapeake Energy, Intel Corp., Skyworks Solutions, Yahoo and Newmont Mining Corp.

Earnings reports for Monday and Tuesday include the following: Alcoa, Inc., Neptune Technologies & Bioresources Inc., VOXX International Corp., Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc., Fastenal Company, Midwest Energy Emissions Corp., Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, Inc., ADTRAN, Inc., AAR Corporation and CSX Corporation.

Stocks in the U.S. appear poised to gain with the futures pointing higher. A positive trading day in the U.S. could help the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average reach new highs. Currently the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average are both approximately 1 percent away from a new record.

Friday’s Activity

For the day the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 18146.74 for a gain of 250.86 points or 1.40 percent. The S&P 500 was also higher, closing at 2129.90 for a gain of 32.00 points or 1.53 percent. The Nasdaq Composite closed higher at 4956.76 for a gain of 79.95 points or 1.64 percent.

Other notable index closes included the small-cap Russell 2000 closing higher for the day at 1177.36 for a gain of 27.60 points or 2.40 percent; the S&P 600 closing at 722.40 for a gain of 16.84 points or 2.39 percent; the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index closing at 1520.42 for a loss of 27.82 points or 1.86 percent; the S&P 100 closing at 942.25 for a gain of 12.91 points or 1.39 percent; the Russell 3000 closing at 1255.97 for a gain of 19.85 points or 1.61 percent; the Russell 1000 closing at 1179.15 for a gain of 17.91 points or 1.54 percent; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index closing at 615.80 for a gain of 8.01 points or 1.32 percent.
