India’s additional demand in three years to match the UK’s present electricity consumption

Over the next three years, India’s increased demand for power is predicted to be about equal to that of the UK. India had the largest increase in energy demand among the major economies in 2023, rising by 7%, according to figures issued by the International Energy Agency. The organization’s Electricity 2024 research projects that demand will increase by 6% until at least 2026.

India’s energy demands are still primarily met by coal. At more than 70%, the proportion has been double that of the global average. Therefore, it is anticipated that emissions will rise due to the growing demand for power in India and its surrounding areas.

The Indian electricity industry faces more challenges than only making the transition to greener energy sources, including nuclear or renewable energy. According to a government evaluation that examined financial stability as well as performance variables including distribution loss and collection efficiency, power distribution businesses have been struggling with bad finances for years, though there has been some progress recently.

In recent years, there appears to have been a general trend toward smaller deficits. The supply of electricity has kept up with the demand.

Nevertheless, India continues to generate substantially less electricity per person than even its contemporaries in emerging markets. The nearest peer in the group known as the Brics (Brazil, Russia, China, and South Africa) produces twice as much power per person as does India.
