U.S. Market Indexes Lower with Mixed Earnings Reports

U.S. market indexes were lower Thursday. For the day the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 18169.68 for a loss of -29.65 points or -0.16 percent. The S&P 500 closed at 2133.04 for a loss of -6.39 points or -0.30 percent. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5215.97 for a loss of -34.29 points or -0.65 percent. The VIX Volatility Index was higher for the day at 15.36 for a gain of 1.12 points or 7.87 percent.

Thursday’s Market Movers

 Stocks were lower Thursday with mixed earnings reports for the day. On the economic calendar were the following reports:

  • Durable Goods Orders down 0.1 percent in September versus consensus of 0.1 percent
  • Jobless Claims declined by 3,000 to 258,000
  • Pending Home Sales Index up 1.5 percent in September

Stocks trading actively for the day included the following:

Bristol-Myers Squibb

Apple

Microsoft

Wells Fargo

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led losses:

Boeing -1.53

Caterpillar -1.33

Chevron -1.26

Apple -0.96

Procter & Gamble -0.94

In the broad market real estate and consumer discretionary led losses.  Technology was also lower with S&P 500 technology stocks down -0.13 percent. Stocks leading losses in technology included the following:

Teradata -8.08

Fiserv -3.24

CSRA -2.73

NVIDIA -2.05

In commodities, gold traded higher as evidenced by the SPDR Gold Trust which reported a gain of 0.22 points or 0.18 percent. The dollar was higher for the day as the U.S. Dollar Index was up 0.29 points or 0.29 percent to 98.91.

Small-Cap Stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1189.95 for a loss of -14.80 points or -1.23 percent. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 719.32 for a loss of -7.97 points or -1.10 percent. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 7176.53 for a loss of -88.34 points or -1.22 percent. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 8488.54 for a loss of -88.05 points or -1.03 percent.

Other Notable Indexes

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1501.05 for a loss of -13.81 points or -0.91 percent; the S&P 100 Index at 949.99 for a loss of -1.22 points or -0.13 percent; the Russell 3000 Index at 1258.03 for a loss of -5.26 points or -0.42 percent; the Russell 1000 Index at 1180.22 for a loss of -4.16 points or -0.35 percent; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 596.69 for a loss of -4.17 points or -0.69 percent.
