U.S. Market Indexes Lower with Negative Reports

U.S. market indexes were lower Tuesday. For the day the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 18169.27 for a loss of -53.76 points or -0.30 percent. The S&P 500 closed at 2143.16 for a loss of -8.17 points or -0.38 percent. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5283.40 for a loss of -26.43 points or -0.50 percent. The VIX Volatility Index closed at 13.68 for a gain of 0.66 points or 5.07 percent.

Tuesday’s Market Movers

Stocks were lower Tuesday with mixed corporate earnings results, lower than expected economic data and lower oil prices. On the economic calendar were the following reports: 

  • FHFA House Price Index up 0.7 percent after previous increase of 0.5 percent
  • S&P Corelogic Case-Shiller HPI up 0.2 percent seasonally adjusted after a 0 percent gain
  • Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Index at 98.6, down from 104.1
  • Richmond Fed Manufacturing Index at -4 after -8 in the previous month

Stocks leading gains in the broad market included the following:

Chesapeake Energy

Under Armour

Bank of America

Ford

AT&T

Apple

KeyCorp

Microsoft

General Motors

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average the following stocks led losses:

Procter & Gamble 3.41

Merck 1.98

United Technologies 1.85

Boeing 1.14

Apple 0.51

Sectors leading losses in the broad market included consumer discretionary and materials. Technology stocks were also lower. The S&P 500 technology sector was down -0.35 percent for the day. Stocks leading losses in technology included the following:

Corning -3.8

CSA -2.14

Adobe -1.61

In commodities, gold traded higher as evidenced by the SPDR Gold Trust which reported a gain of 0.91 points or 0.75 percent. The U.S. Dollar Index was unchanged at 98.75.

Small-Cap Stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1216.10 for a loss of -10.34 points or -0.84 percent; the S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 732.70 for a loss of -7.08 points or -0.96 percent. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 7336.85 for a loss of -80.99 points or -1.09 percent. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 8614.99 for a loss of -42.34 points or -0.49 percent.

Other Notable Indexes

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1522.66 for a loss of -12.08 points or -0.79 percent; the S&P 100 Index at 952.80 for a loss of -1.90 points or -0.20 percent; the Russell 3000 Index at 1266.56 for a loss of -5.86 points or -0.46 percent; the Russell 1000 Index at 1186.79 for a loss of -5.12 points or -0.43 percent; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 600.90 for a gain of 0.11 points or 0.02 percent.
