U.S. Market Indexes Mixed with Rates Unchanged
U.S. market indexes were mixed in trading on Thursday. For the day the Dow Jones Industrial Average was lower closing at 18456.35 for a loss of -15.82 points or -0.09 percent. The S&P 500 was higher, closing at 2170.06 for a gain of 3.48 points or 0.16 percent. The Nasdaq Composite closed higher at 5154.98 for a gain of 15.17 points or 0.30 percent. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 12.72 for a loss of -0.11 points or -0.86 percent.
Thursday’s Market Movers
U.S. market indexes traded mixed with another day of losses from the Dow Jones Industrial Average following the Federal Open Market Committee’s decision to keep its federal funds rate unchanged.
A few reports were on the economic calendar for the day. The International Trade Report showed the trade deficit widening to $63.3 billion. Jobless claims were higher by 14,000 for the week increasing to a total of 266,000. The Wholesale Trade Report showed wholesale trade inventories unchanged after a 0.1 percent increase in the previous month’s report.

In commodities, gold traded lower as evidenced by the SPDR Gold Trust which reported a loss of -0.33 points or -0.26 percent. The dollar was lower for the day as the U.S. Dollar Index was down -0.11 points or -0.11 percent at 96.68.
Small-Cap Stocks
In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index was lower at 1217.33 for a loss of -1.60 points or -0.13 percent. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index was lower at 742.86 for a loss of -2.45 points or -0.33 percent. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index was higher at 7431.62 for a gain of 10.56 points or 0.14 percent. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index was higher at 8717.64 for a gain of 6.69 points or 0.08 percent.
