Market Update: Nifty clings above 10K as midcaps shine; Bharti Airtel top gainer, Britannia hits 1-yr high

Indian markets opened a positive note on Thursday with the Nifty opening up 29 points at 10,013.80 and the Sensex gaining 60.51 points at 31,894.50. The midcap index was the outperforming sector in the early hours of trade led by Biocon, Bharat Financial Inclusion, JSW Energy and Hindustan Zinc.

Within the Nifty50 Index, the top gainers were Bharti Infratel which was up 3.97 percent followed by Hindalco Industries and Sun Pharmaceutical Industries. Indiabulls Real Estate and Hindalco were one of the most active stocks along with TCS which is due to declare its Q2 results later in the day. The pharma Index was also trading in the green led by Aurobindo Pharma which was up over 2 percent.

On the other hand, NIIT Technologies, Religare Enterprises, Intellect Design Arena and Granules India were some of the top gainers in the BSE.

Stocks that hit 52-week high on the Nifty included names like Britannia Industries, Avenue Supermarts, GM Breweries and TVS Motor Company while the scrips which hit 1-year high on the BSE were Gillette India, Bata India, Siyaram Silk, MM Forgings and Muthoot Capital.
The market breadth was clearly in favour of the advances with 30 stocks advancing and 19 declining. BSE Index also projected the same trend with 1462 advances as against 604 declines.
